Health care provider Kaiser Permanente disclosed it suffered a data breach that may have affected more than 13 million patients in the United States.
Kaiser says the data breach, which a data security incident reportedly caused, is the result of third-party trackers installed on its website and mobile applications that leaked data to third-party vendors Google, Microsoft Bing and X, Bleeping Computer reports.Â
The data breach affects approximately 13.4 million current and former Kaiser members and patients, according to the organization, which reportedly says leaked data may include names, IP addresses and details such as how users interacted with mobile apps, websites and search terms in Kaiser’s health encyclopedia.Â
Kaiser says it removed the third-party trackers upon discovering them during a voluntary internal investigation and implemented added security measures to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future, according to Bleeping Computer.
Kaiser not aware of any misuse of leaked informationÂ
Kaiser reportedly says it is not aware of any cases where the leaked data had been misused but will still be contacting potentially affected individuals out of an abundance of caution.Â
The company states the nature of the incident means the data breach would not include any usernames, passwords, Social Security Numbers, financial account info or credit card numbers, Bleeping Computer reports.Â
Kaiser previously announced in June 2022 it was the victim of a data breach that exposed the health information of more than 69,000 of its patients.Â
The health care provider attributed that incident to an attacker accessing the email account of an employee that contained the patients’ protected health information, including first and last names, medical record numbers, dates of service and laboratory test result information.Â
