Comcast confirmed it was affected by a February 2024 data breach involving its past third-party partner Financial Business and Consumer Solutions (FBCS).
The global media and technology company said a total of 237,703 Comcast customers may have been affected by the data breach incident, according to a filing with the Maine attorney general’s office.
Comcast said sensitive customer data exposed in the data breach included names, addresses, Social Security numbers, birthdates and Comcast account numbers and ID numbers that were used internally at FBCS.
FBCS initially believed Comcast customers were not affected by the data breach, however, the debt collection firm later concluded they were, following a more thorough investigation, reports TechRadar.
Comcast used FBCS’ services until 2020. In addition to debt collection services the company also offers account management, financial advisory, credit solutions and payment processing services, reports TechRadar.
Comcast data breach exposed data from around 2021, company says
The sensitive data exposed in the data breach was dated from around 2021 — notably after Comcast stopped using FBCS’ services — according to a sample data breach notification letter provided to the Maine attorney general’s office.
The tech giant said the reason the compromised information was still in FBCS’s position is due to the third-party partner being subject to “data retention requirements” beyond the two companies “working relationship.”
Comcast customers affected by the data breach are being offered complimentary identity theft protection services for at least 12 months through CyEx Identity Defense Complete, which also includes credit monitoring services, according to the sample letter.
FBCS revealed in February that it suffered a data breach that exposed the sensitive information of more than 4.2 million consumers, according to The Verge, which reports the FBCS informed Comcast in July that its customer data was affected.
Truist Bank is another company which revealed it was affected by the data breach, however the financial institution did not say how many of its customers were impacted, reports TechRadar.
A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Comcast early this year over claims it failed to protect the personally identifiable information of its customers during an October 2023 data breach involving Citrix Systems Inc.
