Dating and social networking app Coffee Meets Bagel unlawfully collects, stores, obtains and uses the biometric data of its users, a new class action lawsuit alleges.
Plaintiff Anthony Cajas claims Coffee Meets Bagel violates Illinois’ biometric privacy law by allegedly creating a biometric template of facial scans it requests from its users in order to verify their identities.
Cajas argues the dating app’s users are exposed to “serious and irreversible privacy risks” with the way Coffee Meets Bagel allegedly collects, stores, obtains and uses their biometric data.
“Coffee Meets Bagel users have no means by which to prevent identity theft, unauthorized tracking or other unlawful or improper use of this highly personal and private information,” the dating app class action says.
Cajas wants to represent a class of Illinois residents who had their biometric identifiers collected by Coffee Meets Bagel at any point within the last five years.
Coffee Meets Bagel failed to establish guidelines for permanently destroying collected biometric data, dating app class action claims
Cajas alleges Coffee Meets Bagel violates Illinois biometric privacy law by, among other things, failing to establish a retention schedule and guidelines for permanently destroying the biometric data it collects.
“Coffee Meets Bagel failed to permanently destroy Plaintiff’s facial geometry following the verification of Plaintiff’s identity and instead retained Plaintiff’s biometric information,” the dating app class action states.
Cajas claims Coffee Meets Bagel is violating the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act.
He is demanding a jury trial and requesting declaratory and injunctive relief, along with an award of statutory and actual damages for himself and all class members.
A similar class action lawsuit was filed against another dating app, Bumble, last year by a consumer arguing the company profits from facial scans it allegedly unlawfully collects from its users.
