Zithromax Linked to Heart Risks
The use of azithromycin, sold under the brand name Zithromax, has been linked to a higher risk of fatal heart problems than amoxicillin, its main competitor. Azithromycin is thought to alter the heart’s electrical activity, causing a potentially fatal heart rhythm. These risks are especially dangerous for people with existing heart problems.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has advised doctors to consider the potential heart risks posed by azithromycin and other antibiotics. According to the FDA, close to 40 million people received prescriptions for azithromycin in 2011. Many of the patients who have taken Zithromax have experienced serious, sometimes fatal, side effects from the drug. As the health risks posed by Zithromax become more widely known, the number of Zithromax lawsuits is likely to rise.
Pfizer Uses Aggressive Marketing Tactics
Pfizer is one of the largest drug makers in the United States, and was the first in the industry to transition from a drug research company to one that spends significant money by aggressively marketing its products to consumers. While the company claims that these direct-to-consumer advertisements are a public service that encourages people to visit their doctors more regularly, concern is growing that the company is more concerned with its profits than it is with public health. The FDA has sent multiple warning letters to the drug company, claiming that Pfizer has made unsupported claims about some of its products.
Pfizer has marketed Zithromax Z-Paks as a desirable alternative to other antibiotics on the market due to the shortened course it allows. Pfizer has also heavily marketed the drug to treat ear infections in children, claiming that the shorter course is much more convenient for children and their parents. They created a marketing campaign that included Max the Zebra, a mascot intended to help boost sales of the antibiotic. Despite Pfizer’s marketing of Zithromax to treat children’s ear infections, researchers found that the drug was ineffective to treat ear infections in many children and that other antibiotics were much more successful at treating the condition.
