Zithromax Side Effects: The Real Truth
By Andrea Gressman
Zithromax, also referred to as Z-Pak, Zmax or Azithromycin, is a very common antibiotic prescribed today. It is in a class of prescription medications referred to as macrolide antibiotics. The reason it is believed to be so effective is because it reportedly stops the growth of bacteria. It is used to treat a number of bacterial infections, including the following:
* Bronchitis
* Pneumonia
* Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD)
* Ear Infections
* Lung Infections
* Sinus Infections
* Skin Infections
* Throat Infection Issues
* Reproductive Organ Infection Issues
However, Zithromax is not effective in treating viruses that cause things like colds, the flu, as well as other infections. It has been reported repeatedly, however, that Zithromax is frequently overprescribed for conditions it was not designed to treat, and as a result more people have been exposed to Zithromax’s dangerous side effects.
According to WebMD, because of Zithromax’s popularity, it has become the top 10 most commonly prescribed medications in the United States today. In 2010 alone, more than 52 million prescriptions were provided for Zithromax, Z-Pak, and Azithromycin.
Despite a number of studies detailing dangerous Zithromax side effects, like a recent study published the New England Journal of Medicine linking Z-Pak to heart attacks, it does not seem to affect the popularity of Zithromax or Z-Pak. However, what is clear is that because of the awareness that studies like this provide linking Zithromax to more and more dangerous side effects that the number of Zithromax lawsuits is on the rise.
The New England Journal of Medicine report revealed that a number of Zithromax patients had an increased side effect risk of experiencing sudden cardiac death in comparison to those who took other types of antibiotics or took no antibiotic at all. The present rate of death has been revealed to be 85 Zithromax heart attack deaths for every million prescriptions provided. Based on the 52 million prescriptions that are written each year, it is estimated that 4,420 Zithromax users could potentially die because of the Zithromax side effects.

Zithromax, Z-Pak, and azithromycin have been linked to a number of side effects including:

Pfizer, Inc., the manufacturer of Zithromax, has been listed as the defendant in a number of Zithromax lawsuits.
