Zithromax Allegedly Linked to Sudden Cardiac Death
By Shawn Coates
The popular antibiotic Zithromax, also known as Z-Pak, is facing accusations that consumers who take the drug are put at an increased risk of developing adverse cardiac health effects that could lead to sudden death. This antibiotic is used in many treatments against infections such as skin, ear and respiratory infections, in addition to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). When most people see their doctors regarding any of the above infections, they are rarely questioned about having any prior heart conditions, which could put them at a greater risk of developing cardiac arrest.
FDA Has Raised Concerns about Zithromax Side Effects
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) raised concerns about Zithromax side effects in March 2013. According to the FDA, Zithromax “can cause abnormal changes in the electrical activity of the heart that may lead to a potentially fatal irregular heart rhythm. Patients at particular risk for developing this condition include those with known risk factors such as existing QT interval prolongation, low blood levels of potassium or magnesium, a slower than normal heart rate, or use of certain drugs used to treat abnormal heart rhythms, or arrhythmias.” Physicians have been warned and been made aware of the proper precautions and questions to ask new patients when suggesting Zithromax, especially for those with pre-existing heart conditions, such as heart arrhythmia. However, this warning may come too late for many Z-Pak users who have already suffered serious Z-Pak side effects such as heart attack, liver failure, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, Trachoma/eye infections/blindness, Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis, or other cardiovascular problems after taking Zithromax.
New England Study Looks at Zithromax Cardiac Risks
In May 2012, the FDA was first made aware of the significant cardiac risks associated with Zithromax after a study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) that “compared the risks of cardiovascular death in patients treated with the antibacterial drugs azithromycin, amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin (Cipro), and levofloxacin (Levaquin), or no antibacterial drug.” Compared to persons treated with amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, or no drug, persons that took the 5-day dose of azithromycin (the main ingredient in Zithromax) were at a much higher increased risk of cardiovascular death.
