There are a number of epilepsy treatments that are designed to help patients limit the number of seizures that they experience. However, many also carry the risk of causing Stevens Johnson Syndrome, a condition that attacks the mucus membranes. It is one among several Onfi side effects that parents of small children suffering from convulsive events must keep in mind.
While Onfi has been used throughout the world for nearly a decade for both the treatment of seizures as well as mental health problems, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has significantly restricted its use. It is generally prescribed as a first-line treatment for Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome. For most patients, seizures begin before age six and doctors often struggle to control them, and will consider some treatments despite the risk of Stevens Johnsons Syndrome side effects.
While only on the market for a few years, Onfi has already been linked to the autoimmune disorder in at least five patients. Unfortunately for epilepsy patients, while Onfi is used mainly for the rare Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, nearly every medication used to limit seizures contains the same risks for both Stevens-Johnson Syndrome side effects as well as the more dangerous variant Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN). Patients who develop TEN run the risk of losing large patches of skin, with some reports indicating as much as 70 percent of the epidermis dying off.Parents of children who are taking Onfi should be watching for any skin rashes that are tied to a fever and chills. Although this reaction most commonly occurs when the medication is started or the dose is shifted, it can happen at any time. Consult with a medical professional if you have any concerns. There is no guaranteed cure for SJS, but doctors who treat the afflicted in hospitals often say that early detection can minimize the risk of the disorder progressing and becoming TEN.
Patients who have developed one of these conditions while taking Onfi may wish to pursue damages for lost quality of life, medical bills and other financial needs. Learn whether or not you are eligible to do so with a no-cost consultation available for those who visit the Stevens Johnson (SJS) & Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) Class Action Lawsuit Investigation today.
