Yaz/Yasmin Named in More Lawsuits than Any Other Drug, Besides One
By Kimberly Mirando
According to a report issued earlier this summer, birth control pills Yaz and Yasmin were named in more lawsuits last year than any other medication marketed in the United States, except for the acid reflux drug metoclopramide (Reglan). Thousands of Yaz/Yasmin injury lawsuits were filed in 2011, and the number of cases continues to grow as women come forward alleging the popular birth control pills caused dangerous blood clot injuries such as pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, heart attack and stroke. Dozens of women have even died from Yaz/Yasmin blood clots, resulting in wrongful death lawsuits against the pills’ manufacturer, Bayer. Yaz and Yasmin are a combined oral contraceptive containing the synthetic progestin drospirenone, which is associated with a higher risk of blood clots than other combined birth control products. According to the May 2012 QuarterWatch report issued by the Institute of Safe Medicine Practices, 8,354 Yaz and Yasmin lawsuit were filed against Bayer in 2011. To date, nearly 12,000 Yaz/Yasmin lawsuits have been filed against Bayer. Most of these are pending in a Yasmin/Yaz lawsuit MDL underway in Illinois federal court. Other Yaz and Yasmin lawsuits are making their way through state courts in New Jersey, California and Pennsylvania.
