Yaz/Yasmin Blood Clot Risks 3X Higher than Other Pills
By Anne Bucher
Nearly 5,000 women have filed lawsuits against Bayer Pharmaceuticals, claiming that they suffered blood clots after using Yaz or Yasmin for birth control. Bayer agreed to pay $1 billion to settle these drug injury cases. More recently, Bayer agreed to pay an additional $24 million to settle claims that women suffered gallbladder injuries after taking Yaz or Yasmin.
In total, more than 10,000 women who have suffered severe Yaz or Yasmin side effects have filed lawsuits against Bayer. Plaintiffs in these lawsuits claim Bayer knew, or should have known, about the risks posed by Yaz and Yasmin but failed to provide adequate warning to women and their doctors. They allege that the risk of blood clot blood clots from these birth control pills can be fatal to some women.
Bayer Used Misleading Marketing Tactics
Many of the lawsuits allege that Bayer used misleading advertisements to promote the drug. The television commercials suggested that the birth control pills would relieve premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms, including irritability, nausea, cramps and bloating. The commercials also claimed that Yaz and Yasmin could treat acne. Studies have shown that Bayer overstated the benefits of these birth control pills. While Yaz and Yasmin do provide relief for these symptoms, the relief is limited to women who suffer from premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and women who suffer from mild-to-moderate acne. The pills are not effective to relieve regular PMS or severe acne.
Higher Risk of DVT with Yaz than with Other Birth Control Pills
Although all birth control pills are associated with an increased risk of blood clots, some studies have suggested that the blood clot risk associated with Yaz and Yasmin may be three times more than other contraceptive pills. A study published in the May 2009 edition of the British Medical Journal found that women who took contraceptive pills that contained drospirenone were more than six times as likely to develop deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) compared to women who did not take birth control pills. DVT is a blood clot that develops in the legs. Although it may cause pain, DVT is dangerous if the clot moves out of the legs. If the clot enters the bloodstream, it can cause a pulmonary embolism, heart attack or stroke.
In April 2012, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) warned that women who take Yaz face an increased risk of suffering from DVT and other vascular problems. The FDA claims that this risk is highest during the first year of use. Bayer has updated the Yaz label to include this health warning.
