Yaz Lawsuit Filed by DVT & Pulmonary Embolism Victim
By Andrea Gressman
Around the country, multiple Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella lawsuits are underway. However, the total number of Plaintiffs alleging serious Yaz blood clot injuries continues to expand. The most recent entrant into the Yaz/Yasmin/Ocella lawsuit litigation is Kathrine Ruffin, who filed a Yaz injury lawsuit in August 2012 as a result of suffering serious Yaz side effects, including pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
Ruffin alleges in the Yaz blood clot lawsuit that after a year of taking Yaz birth control at her doctor’s direction, she suffered serious side effects, including deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism — dangerous blood clot injuries that can lead to heart attack and stroke. As a result, she incurred extensive medical bills, and will likely have to continue expensive medical treatment.
Ruffin says in the Yaz injury lawsuit that she wasn’t aware of the side effects of Yaz because at the time she started taking it, there weren’t warnings on the label to inform her or her doctor. According to her Yaz lawsuit, the birth control pill’s manufacturers should have known about the risks of developing Yaz blood clots and warned consumers accordingly. After all, they had been receiving numerous complaints from patients about Yaz blood clot injuries and a number of Yaz lawsuits had been filed. This is on top of research released about the side effects of Yaz, which studies show can increase the risk of blood clots by 74%. Therefore, they failed in their duty to warn and are liable for Ruffin’s medical expenses and diminished health, her Yaz blood clot attorney says.
Dangerous Yaz/Yasmin/Ocella Side Effects Lead to Numerous Lawsuits
Yaz is a type of oral birth control that is also marketed under the names Yasmin, Beyaz and Ocella. It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001. Despite the approval of Yaz, the medication was quickly linked to a number of side effects, including an increased risk of pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, stroke, blood clots, and even death.
In 2002, the British Medical Journal published a report that described the side effects linked to Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz and Ocella birth control. The report outlined 40 different women who had experienced deep vein thrombosis while taking the Yasmin line of birth control pills. This initial report was followed by a second report in 2003 looking at five more situations of deep vein thrombosis in Yasmin/Yaz/Beyaz/Ocella patients, including two where the women in question died.
Despite this international evidence, the makers of Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella and Beyaz did not withdraw the drugs from the market. Instead, they continued to market Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella and Beyaz as an effective form of birth control and kept mention of the potential side effects of taking Yaz to a minimum in their advertisements. The FDA cautioned the manufacturers twice for misleading consumers with this style of advertising, but did not force the companies to change their safety labeling until 2011.
After women around the world realized the extent of the risks of cardiac injury from the birth control, many filed Yaz lawsuits, Beyaz lawsuit, Ocella lawsuits and Yasmin lawsuits. They claimed that they were misled by the information distributed by the manufacturers of Yaz about the safety of the drug, and that the absence of warnings represented a deliberate attempt by the manufacturers to hide the side effects of the drug from the public.
