Yaz Injury Lawsuit Filed by Florida Woman
By Christina Drury
A Florida woman filed a lawsuit against Bayer on September 19, 2012, claiming that their birth control medication, known as Yaz, caused her to suffer serious injuries, including bladder problems, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, vein damage, permanent lung damage, blood clots and swelling in her legs. The Plaintiff, Connie Serrano, filed in her home county of Lee, but was informed on November 30, 2012, that her Yaz lawsuit was moved into federal court in the Southern District of Illinois to join the multidistrict litigation against the drug manufacturing giant.
Studies Conducted Link Yaz to Blood Clots
Approved by the FDA in 2006, Yaz found its way into drug stores marketed as a fourth-generation progestin used as a contraceptive to prevent pregnancy. One of the main ingredients in Yaz is drospirenone, which studies have linked to an increased possibility of developing blood clots in comparison to those using a contraceptive pill containing an older ingredient known as levonorgestrel. The two studies outlining the dangerous link of blood clots to the use of Yaz were published in the British Medical Journal in 2009. The first Yaz blood clot study determined that levonorgestrel was a safer main ingredient than the drospirenone found in Yaz. The second study revealed that women using Yaz or Yasmin had double the risk of developing blood clots than women using birth control pills containing levonorgestrel.
Lawsuit Alleges Plaintiff Suffered Yaz Blood Clots and Other Complications
Serrano states in the Yaz blood clot lawsuit that she took Yaz at various times between July of 2002 and September of 2010. Serrano alleges that the injuries she suffered are a direct result of using the birth control medication. She claims she suffered Yaz blood clots which led to a bevy of subsequent complications. Serrano’s Yaz lawsuit links each symptom she suffered, starting with deep vein thrombosis, which is caused by blood clots forming in the legs. These blood clots can travel from the legs up to the lungs, which can then cause a pulmonary embolism.
Serrano alleges in the Yaz injury lawsuit that the she suffered a Yaz induced pulmonary embolism, which caused lung damage, swelling in her legs as well as vein and leg complications. Serrano states that these injuries that she has suffered as a result of using Yaz will lead to long-term medical care and high medical costs. Serrano only became aware of the connection between Yaz and her blood clots and injuries after she sustained them. Serrano is seeking more than $75,000 in damages through a Yaz blood clot settlement.
