Yahoo! Writer Blames Paxil for Stillbirth
By Jessica Tyner
Marilisa Sachteleben started taxing Paxil seven years ago. As one of the most popular anti-anxiety medications on the market, she was assured of its safety and hadn’t heard of any Paxil complications. However, seven years ago Paxil was relatively new and Sachteleben’s therapist recommended that she try it to help with panic attacks. If she’d known what she was really signing up for, she never would have risked it, she says.
Sachteleben says that nowadays, the side effects of Paxil are much better known. Like many Paxil users, she experienced weight gain and increased bad cholesterol levels. However, that was only the beginning. When Sachteleben became pregnant, both her OBGYN and mid-wife told her taking Paxil was fine, and she believed them. She gave birth to a stillborn baby a few months later.
Paxil and Birth Defects
Years after the heartbreaking stillbirth, Sachteleben began to uncover horror stories that linked Paxil to birth defects, miscarriages and stillborn babies. It’s been five years since the Yahoo! writer lost her baby, but she’s still afraid to go cold turkey with Paxil. Her doctor has warned her that it’s a very challenging drug to quit, and even though she struggles daily with the extra weight (and burden of a stillbirth), she’s afraid of what might happen without the drug.
According to Sachteleben, the weight is piling on at an impossible rate. For the first 40 years of her life, she never struggled with being overweight. Simultaneously, she’s experiencing blood pressure issues. Her bad cholesterol levels continue to skyrocket while her good cholesterol levels are falling at an alarming rate. Even with diet and exercise, she can’t stop the weight from increasing.
A Struggle to Be Healthy
Sachteleben admits that she’s now well beyond the age of carrying a healthy baby. Like many mothers of stillborn children, she suffers daily from her loss. However, she’s also struggling to fight off the weight gain. She’s switched to an extremely healthy diet and follows a strict exercise regimen — so far, those attempts are futile. Watching her bad cholesterol rise every month, her doctor has been pressuring her to get on Lipitor to handle it, but she doesn’t want to take any more drugs.
Finally, Sachteleben asked if Paxil can cause weight gain and bad cholesterol spikes in addition to birth defects. Her doctor admitted that yes, Paxil has been linked to both. She has no idea why this information wasn’t shared with her, but it gave her the push she needed to get off Paxil. Sadly, the Paxil side effects, such as her lost child, will remain with her for life.
