What Ad Campaigns Missed with Mirena IUD Side Effects
By John Curran
Many of the women who have dealt with uterine perforation and other Mirena intrauterine device (IUD) side effects point to the ad campaigns launched by drug maker Bayer Pharmaceuticals as one reason they talked with their gynecologist. Even the FDA says the original scripts for the birth control product did not properly describe the risks of the devices, report Mirena IUD lawsuit lawyers.
It is true that the Mirena IUD is implanted once, rather than women having to take an oral contraceptive at a certain time each day. However, sex was not always better due to Mirena IUD uterine perforation side effects, which was not mentioned as part the real risks that women face. In addition, the device had problems similar to earlier birth control alternatives that included pimples and weight gain.
Bayer Pharmaceuticals had to update its advertising in 2009, but some of its product labeling issues still have not gone away. Once the device is properly implanted, the company says there is basically no risk of Mirena IUD spontaneous migration problems, where the T-shaped device can move throughout the pelvis including in the uterine wall. For many women, the slogan of “Look and Feel Great” did not turn out the way they wanted, with nearly 50,000 adverse effect reports in the first 15 years after the device was approved.
All medical devices and treatments come with risks, but women who are unaware of Mirena uterine perforation side effects could not make a rational decision about whether or not to get the implant as part of a contraceptive regimen. In fact, surveys of gynecologists indicate that they are still not aware of problems that can happen months after they perform the procedure. Mirena IUD lawsuit lawyers note that the lack of information is likely contributing to the still growing number of adverse effect reports as well as plaintiffs’ claims.
Legal remedies are available, and cases are likely being centralized within the next few months.
