Vaginal Sling Study Supports Injury Claims Made in Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuits
By Sarah Pierce
A new study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that vaginal mesh slings lead to increased risks of urethral sling complications such as bladder perforation, urinary tract infections, bleeding and more. The study adds to the growing concern about the safety of vaginal mesh devices raised in hundreds of transvaginal mesh lawsuits filed throughout the country. Women are seeking damages in vaginal mesh lawsuits for injuries they experienced as a result of using defective vaginal mesh devices manufactured by Boston Scientific, American Medical Systems, C.R. Bard, Ethicon, and others. According to the June 2012 study, insertion of a vaginal sling during surgery carries a higher risk of urethral sling complications, despite decreasing the chances of postoperative urinary incontinence. The study analyzed data from 337 participants who underwent surgery to treat pelvic organ prolapse between May 2007 and October 2009. The vaginal sling study found that after 12 months, 27.3% of women with the vaginal sling had urinary incontinence, compared to 43% without a vaginal sling. However, those implanted with the vaginal sling suffered other complications. Nearly 7% suffered bladder perforation, 31% experienced urinary tract infections, and over 3% experienced bleeding complications. Nearly 4% of vaginal sling patients experienced incomplete bladder emptying, the study said.
Urethral Sling Study Adds to Concerns Raised in Vaginal Mesh Lawsuits
The vaginal mesh sling study provides further evidence of what hundreds of women have been claiming in transvaginal mesh lawsuits against manufacturers of pelvic repair systems — these systems carry too many complications and side effects to be used safely.
In 2011, an FDA panel evaluated the safety of vaginal mesh implants and recommended post-market studies for transvaginal mesh, which has been linked to serious transvaginal mesh side effects such as severe pain and vaginal mesh erosion. The agency did not require such studies for vaginal slings, but the latest study raises concerns about their risks and benefits. Women suffering vaginal mesh side effects and vaginal sling side effects should consult a transvaginal mesh compensation specialist to see if they have a claim to file a vaginal mesh lawsuit or vaginal sling lawsuit to seek compensation for their injuries.
Hundreds of women who have suffered vaginal sling side effects and vaginal mesh complications have filed lawsuits against the manufacturers, many of which have been consolidated into a single MDL proceeding. The vaginal mesh lawsuit MDL allows hundreds of transvaginal mesh victims to file lawsuits under the jurisdiction of one judge, but still allows each vaginal mesh Plaintiff to retain her own attorney and receive an individual award if the case is won or settled. The award they would receive is typically much larger than any individual award expected in a vaginal mesh class action lawsuit. In a transvaginal mesh class action lawsuit, hundreds of thousands of vaginal mesh patients are joined together. Once, or if, a vaginal mesh class action settlement is reached, the class members would typically share the award, which could be in the range of thousands of dollars per claimant, rather than tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, or even millions of dollars in some cases for individual transvaginal mesh lawsuits.
Anyone who has a transvaginal mesh device, vaginal sling, or bladder sling needs to know the side effects so they can be caught and hopefully treated without further serious complications. Common transvaginal mesh side effects alleged in lawsuits include:
* pain during sex
* urinary problems
* pelvic organ prolapse
* vaginal scarring
* perforated bladder
* perforated bowl or perforated blood vessels
* mesh erosion into the vagina
* infection
* organ injuries
If you are experiencing these vaginal mesh side effects, you should see a doctor immediately for treatment. You should also speak with a transvaginal mesh specialist to see if you are a good fit to file a vaginal mesh class action lawsuit or an individual transvaginal mesh lawsuit.
