Vaginal Sling Study Supports Injury Claims Made in Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuits

A new study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that vaginal mesh slings lead to increased risks of urethral sling complications such as bladder perforation, urinary tract infections, bleeding and more. The study adds to the growing concern about the safety of vaginal mesh devices raised in hundreds of transvaginal mesh lawsuits filed throughout the country. According to the June 2012 study, insertion of a vaginal sling during surgery carries a higher risk of urethral sling complications, despite decreasing the chances of postoperative urinary incontinence. The study analyzed data from 337 participants who underwent surgery to treat pelvic organ prolapse between May 2007 and October 2009. The vaginal sling study found that after 12 months, 27.3% of women with the vaginal sling had urinary incontinence, compared to 43% without a vaginal sling. However, those implanted with the vaginal sling suffered other complications. Nearly 7% suffered bladder perforation, 31% experienced urinary tract infections, and over 3% experienced bleeding complications. Nearly 4% of vaginal sling patients experienced incomplete bladder emptying, the study said. 

 
Urethral Sling Study Adds to Concerns Raised in Vaginal Mesh Lawsuits
