Vaginal Mesh Injury Reports Grow into the Thousands

By Christina Drury

pelvic organ prolapse treatmentMany women each year suffer from various afflictions including urinary incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse – also known as POP. As a means of relieving the symptoms that are associated with these conditions, there is a surgical procedure that is done where vaginal mesh is implanted to help stabilize the vaginal wall and support the pelvic muscles. While seemingly successful in its beginning stages, it was not long before the complaints starting rolling in from women who were experiencing significant vaginal mesh side effects that warranted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) involvement.

Increasing Onset of Vaginal Mesh Implant Side Effects

There are a variety of vaginal mesh products that are coming under scrutiny as they are not performing as well as they were originally stated to. The most common vaginal mesh side effects that are reported include:

  • Extreme pain when mesh erodes or shrinks
  • Erosion of the vaginal mesh
  • Urinary problems
  • Bleeding
  • Infections
  • Pain during intercourse

Between the years of 2005 and 2007, there were over 1,000 complaints lodged with the FDA in regards to the development of vaginal mesh implant side effects. More alarmingly, from the years 2008 through 2010, the number more than doubled to 2,874 complaints lodged, forcing the FDA to issue a safety statement in regards to the possible complications that can be experienced with the use of vaginal mesh as a means of transvaginal repair.

Women are not the only ones who are affected by transvaginal mesh side effects. Men who come into contact with eroded vaginal mesh during sexual intercourse have noted experiencing pain or discomfort. The mesh used in these products is also used in bladder sling implant for men.

FDA Issues Safety Concern

Because of the increasing amounts of complaints in regards to vaginal mesh and bladder sling implants, the FDA took action on July 13, 2011 and made a statement that advised both practitioners and patients alike that complications that occur with vaginal mesh devices are not rare. Additionally, the FDA also noted that there is no concrete evidence that vaginal mesh is more effective when used in transvaginal repair versus other methods, and that the use of vaginal mesh may very well subject patients to a higher risk.

Vaginal Mesh Side Effects Not Linked to Single Brand

Further adding complication to the issue at hand is that there is no unique brand that is tied to vaginal implant side effects. Any brand or manufacturer’s vaginal mesh product could cause these side effects, leading women and their physicians to become more wary and educated about their possible options. Since there is another option – repairing the pelvic muscles and vaginal wall through stitches – there is no longer as much dependence on vaginal mesh implants.
