Vaginal Mesh Implants Damage Thousands of POP Patients
By Robert J. Boumis
Under certain conditions, like childbirth and stress incontinence, the organs of the pelvis can fall out of place. This condition is called Pelvic Organ Prolapse or POP. In some cases, this condition can heal on its own. But in other cases, it requires surgical intervention to repair a patient’s organs. One popular way of treating POP is vaginal mesh. Unfortunately, evidence is mounting that this medical implant may cause painful, potentially life-threatening side effects for many patients.
Since the invention of surgical mesh in the 1970s, some surgeons have cut it into special shapes for use in repairing POP. However, in the 1990s, certain pharmaceutical companies developed specialized vaginal mesh implant specifically intended for use in repairing POP. However, it appears that vaginal mesh may have caused serious complications for thousands of patients.
Some patients who had vaginal mesh implanted into their bodies went on to suffer from mesh erosion. In this complication, friction causes the mesh to abrade and cut its way through the tissues around it. This can cause serious damage to various organs of the pelvis, including the vagina, uterus, bowel, and bladder. Additionally, the mesh in the vaginal sling implant can puncture organ and cause serious damage to the patient’s body.
In some patients, the body may grow tissue around the vaginal mesh. This process is called embedment. Embedment typically causes severe, debilitating pain in the patient. In many cases, it requires surgical intervention to remove the embedded mesh. Unfortunately for some patients, it may require multiple surgeries to remove the mesh from the bladder sling implant. In extreme cases, the mesh may be so intertwined with the tissue that it cannot be completely removed. These patients suffer lifelong complications and pain as a result of their vaginal mesh implants.
Both of these complications can, in turn, cause other side effects. The damage from embedment and erosion can cause permanent scarring on the organs of the pelvis. This may cause long-term pain and impair the function of these organs. Patients may suffer from extended convalescence and lost wages.
Vaginal mesh injury lawsuits have been filed against manufacturers of surgical mesh. These lawsuits allege that the manufactures knew, or should have known about the serious risks of complications associated with these medical implants. The vaginal mesh lawsuits further allege that manufacturers failed to act on this information in a timely manner – or even actively downplayed the risks – preventing patients and their health care providers from having the information they needed to make informed medical decisions.
Plaintiffs in vaginal mesh lawsuits are seeking millions of dollars in damages related to side effects they suffered after receiving surgical mesh implants to treat POP and stress urinary incontinence.
