Unum Lawsuit Filed by Disabled Woman Denied Disability Insurance Benefits

Plaintiff Rhea Hammond alleges in the Unum lawsuit that she was forced to stop working in June 2008 due to multiple medical conditions, including pancreatitis, abdominal pain, spondylosis, knee pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, osteoporosis, chronic pain, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, and many more. These medical conditions, combined with her overall poor physical condition, caused her to become disabled and unable to work sometime in June 2008. Hammond says in the Unum insurance lawsuit that her request for short-term disability benefits with Unum disability insurance was granted, and when she filed a request for long-term disability benefits, Unum initially granted the request on March 9, 2009. Six months later, however, Unum notified Hammond that her long-term disability benefits would be terminated unless she appealed. According to the Unum disability insurance lawsuit, Hammond appealed the denial and submitted additional medical records to corroborate her claim that she could no longer work in either her chosen profession or any other occupation covered by the Unum long-term disability insurance plan. Despite providing proof that she could no longer work, Unum affirmed its denial of disability benefits three months later, dismissing any of the professional opinions presented by her medical team.

With the help of her Unum attorney, Hammond has filed an Unum claim denial lawsuit against the company demanding that Unum pay her the disability benefits she is rightfully owed — and paid for. She is asking for a monthly sum of nearly $2,700 for as long as she is disabled, which is the amount she is rightfully owed according to the provisions of her Unum disability insurance policy.
