Unum Claim Denial Fraud – How Many Victims Are There?
By Christina Drury
Disability insurance is a very important part of your life; you rely on it to pay your medical expenses and to pay you when you are unable to work and need them. There are several different types of disability insurance, and the benefits are clearly outlined in the policy. However, it may have come as a shock to many people who carried policies through Unum, UnumProvident and its subsidiaries when their procedures were denied and claims were not paid. Subsequent investigations into Unum and their claim denial history showed that not only were the claims being denied, but employees were offered incentives as a means of denying claims.
Many Sacrificed Quality of Life
When a disability claim is denied and the person filing the claim can no longer work, it is the duty of the disability insurance holder to review the claim and make an accurate decision as to whether or not the claim is able to be approved. Disability claims are submitted with paperwork and documentation that is signed by a physician who determines the severity of the injury or disability.
Instead of reviewing these claims and approving the ones that provided substantial evidence to the disability, Unum choose to be greedy and deny the claims. This resulted in inflated profits and kept the company in the black while many people sacrificed the quality of their own lives to try to make ends meet while unable to work whether for short-term or extended periods of time.
Unum Disability Claim Denials Date Back to 1996
In some instances, the Unum claim denials date back to as early as 1996, when claimants were denied disability benefits. This is quite alarming considering that Unum covers approximately 17 million Americans – or 40% of the population’s disability insurance. Investigations showed that the reason behind the denials of the claims was simple – pure greed. The money saved in denying the claims lined the pockets of the company who “saved” money on not having to pay out claims. Their reasons for denial included:
- Pre-existing condition
- Condition not covered
- Procedures needed are considered “experimental” or “elective”
More than 200,000 Unum claims were denied over a course of several years. Many of those who have chosen to file Unum lawsuits are eligible to collect compensation and several Unum lawsuits have already been settled for millions of dollars.

I finally got my disability but then they cancelled it. They found one doctor who said I wasn’t disabled. I was really, really sick. The attorney made a quick settlement but for only one injured body part. They completely deny I ever claimed the other but I know I did. I went from employee of the year with the city of Oakland to homeless. It may be too late for me but maybe I can be of help to others.
