University Student Suffers Heart Attack from Yaz Blood Clot
By Christina Drury

For most students, August is the time to get ready to go back to school and continue with their post-graduate studies. For one student, however — Zurka Wolford — her time was spent in a hospital bed recovering from what could’ve been a deadly blood clot. The culprit? Wolford’s prescription for Yaz birth control.
Wolford began taking Yaz in 2011, and it was her first birth control pill that she had ever taken. Prior to Yaz, she had never been on any form of birth control.
In 2012, Wolford filed a Yaz lawsuit against its manufacturer, Bayer Pharmaceuticals. Her complaint alleged that she had only been taking Yaz for four months before she woke up in the middle of the night with terrible chest pains. She felt better soon after and went back to sleep. Several nights later, she woke up again, this time with an isolated pain that occurred in her ribs. After the pain persisted, her parents took her to the emergency room where she found herself surrounded by a group of doctors.
MRI Reveals Blood Clot in Her Lung
Due to her difficulty breathing, Wolford underwent an MRI where doctors discovered that she had a blood clot in her lung, her right one to be exact. Additionally, what’s even scarier is that although Wolford had jokingly considered the idea that her chest pains a few nights earlier had been a heart attack, the doctors confirmed that it indeed had been a heart attack, after all. She spent a night in the hospital and for six months after took blood thinners to prevent the occurrence of another blood clot.
Bayer, who had marketed Yaz as a preferred option for women who have difficulty with hormonal tolerance, has yet to respond to the allegations filed in Wolford’s Yaz blood clot lawsuit, although it is a year later. Wolford is not looking for monetary compensation; she simply wants Yaz removed from the market.
Some newer-generation birth control pills have been marketed in the last several years offering women newer choices and stronger hormones. One such birth control pill is known as Yaz, a newer version of the drug Yasmin. Despite the popularity of Yaz, however, there have been several issues surrounding its potential side effects and risks. One such issue involves reports of hundreds of women suffering deadly blood clots that lead to injuries such as pulmonary embolism, vein thrombosis (DVT), heart attack and stroke from Yaz and Yasmin use.
