Despite an increased risk of complications, the popular type-2 diabetes drug Onglyza may offer no additional benefit than other such drugs.
Since its release onto the market in 2009, type-2 diabetes drug Onglyza has been hailed by its manufacturers as superior and more effective than other medications like it.
A recent study that looked at the efficacy of the type-2 diabetes drug Onglyza and similar medications indicated that there is no significant difference between the efficacy of Onglyza and other type-2 diabetes drugs.
The study, published in the July 2016 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, examined data from 301 separate clinical trials. In total, these trials included over 110,000 individual patients.
The medications involved in the study included type-2 diabetes drug Onglyza, as well as similar drugs Actos, Januvia, metformin, Glyset, and sulfonylureas.
These drugs belong to three separate classes of diabetes drugs. The first, thiazolidinediones, consists of Actos and Avandia, DDP-4 inhibitors are Onglyza and Januvia, and glucosidase inhibitors are Precose and Glyset.
Though patients involved in the study—over 110,000 of them—took different drugs or even a combination of them, the study found that there was no significant difference in risk of death between any of the medications.
Metformin was found to result in slightly lower AIC levels, a common marker of blood glucose levels, than the other drugs involved in the study. Ultimately, each of the drugs was found to be equally effective when added to metformin.
Manufacturers of Onglyza, as well as other type-2 diabetes drugs, have advertised their medications as superior options than others available on the market. But this study shows that metformin was found to be the most reliable of initial treatments.
A study earlier this year resulted in similar findings. Indeed, in April 2016, researchers noted in the Annals of Internal Medicine that metformin was what they considered to be the best first-line therapy for type-2 diabetes available.
For users of type-2 diabetes drug Onglyza and other similar drugs, these studies can raise significant concerns about manufacturers misrepresenting the safety and efficacy of their diabetes medications.
Though these drugs may have similar levels of efficacy, some are also linked with serious risks, perhaps leading users to question whether or not a certain drug is worth the risk with no additional benefit.
Type-2 Diabetes Drug Onglyza Linked to Serious Side Effects
Type-2 diabetes drug Onglyza has been linked with an increased risk of heart failure, among other serious side effects.
A growing number of plaintiffs who have suffered serious side effects as a result of using type-2 diabetes drug Onglyza or similar medications are filing lawsuits against the drug manufacturers.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has also responded to the issues with Onglyza, requiring its manufacturers to place additional warnings on its product labels showing the potential for heart problems.
If you or someone you know has suffered from Onglyza heart failure, cancer, or other serious side effects after using the type-2 diabetes drug Onglyza, you may be able to take legal action.
While filing an Onglyza heart failure lawsuit may not fix the damage, it can help to alleviate the physical, emotional, and financial losses felt as a result of using Onglyza.
In general, Onglyza lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
