If you or someone you love has suffered from the effects of Zithromax Stevens Johnson syndrome, you may be able to seek compensation through a Zithromax lawsuit.
Zithromax Basics
Zithromax is one of several medications that has been linked with Stevens Johnson syndrome. Others include Dilantin, Lamictal, and Advil.
While any antibiotic comes with side effects and allergic reactions, in most of these cases, they are mild or rare. In other cases, side effects can be serious, long-lasting, and even fatal, such as with Zithromax Stevens Johnson syndrome.
If you have been diagnosed with Stevens Johnson syndrome after using Zithromax, there may be a connection between the use of this medication and your diagnosis with this serious condition.
Zithromax Stevens Johnson Syndrome
Although antibiotics are generally considered to be the safest kinds of drugs, even these medications come with certain side effects. While most are mild, like a skin rash that goes away on its own without further treatment, others may be much more severe and have lasting effects.
Zithromax Stevens Johnson syndrome is a painful and life-threatening condition that attacks the skin and mucous membranes. Zithromax Stevens Johnson syndrome can cover huge portions of the body quite rapidly, covering the skin in painful blisters. These skin rashes can become so severe that its symptoms resemble burns. Because of these similarities, Zithromax Stevens Johnson syndrome is commonly treated in a hospital’s burn unit.
Zithromax Stevens Johnson syndrome should be considered a medical emergency, and medical help should be sought immediately.
Even if a skin rash is mild, it may eventually progress to something more serious, changing to purple or red, blistering, and spreading across the skin.
When a patient suffers from Zithromax Stevens Johnson syndrome, the skin rash can spread to cover up to 30 percent of the body, and the skin may begin to peel away. Any more than 30 percent, and it becomes reclassified as toxic epidermal necrolysis, or TEN.
The main difference between these two conditions (besides amount of skin covered) is the severity: the mortality rate linked with Zithromax Stevens Johnson Syndrome is 15 percent, while the mortality rate of TEN is closer to 40 percent.
After reports of Zithromax Stevens Johnson Syndrome began, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) required that Pfizer Inc., Zithromax’s manufacturer, include a warning label about the risk of Stevens Johnson syndrome associated with the medication.
Zithromax Stevens Johnson Syndrome Lawsuits
If you have taken Zithromax and later been diagnosed with Zithromax Stevens Johnson syndrome, you may be able to pursue litigation. Indeed, a number of injured patients have filed Stevens Johnson syndrome lawsuits, alleging that the drug manufacturer knew about the serious risks linked with their drug, but chose to deliberately downplay the severity of these side effects.
Plaintiffs involved in these SJS lawsuits claim that, had the manufacturer adequately warned them of the risk of Stevens Johnson syndrome linked with the drug, they would have chosen to take a safer alternative medication.
If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with Zithromax Stevens Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis after taking the drug, you may be able to file a Zithromax Stevens Johnson syndrome lawsuit.
