Studies Link Lipitor to Diabetes, Especially in Women

By Robert J. Boumis

Lipitor diabetesHigh blood pressure plagues millions of Americans. For many, diet and exercise alone do not sufficiently control this chronic health problem. The drug Lipitor (Atorvastatin) and other statins help patients with high cholesterol improve their health. However, it appears the drug may also cause health problems of its own, making some Lipitor users more likely to develop diabetes.

A study published in 2011 by the Lancet, a prestigious medical journal, featured a meta-analysis (a comparison of various studies on a subject). It found that patients taking Lipitor experienced a 9-percent increase in their chance of developing type-2 diabetes. The same year, a study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that women who took statins were 40 percent more likely to develop type-2 diabetes than women who did not. While the Lancet study focused on statins in general, the JACC study focused on Lipitor specifically.

Later, in January of 2012, the peer-reviewed medical journal The Archives of Internal Medicine published a study that found that post-menopausal women who took Lipitor experienced a greater chance of developing type-2 diabetes. The study collected information as a part of the Women’s Health Initiative, and controlled for other factors.

In response to the growing concerns related to Lipitor, the FDA released a warning in 2012 stating that Lipitor may be linked to an increased risk of developing type-2 diabetes. The FDA’s statement advised health care providers to discus the risks of developing diabetes with patients taking statins like Lipitor. However, the FDA did not recommend that patients stop taking their drugs without consulting a physician.

Lipitor, and other statins, work by changing the way cholesterol is processed by the liver. This lowers the amount of cholesterol in the blood, and may soften arteries in patients with high blood pressure. These changes may decrease a patient’s risk of cardiovascular disease.

A Lipitor diabetes class action lawsuit investigation has been launched to explore the possibility of a mass tort against the manufacturers of Lipitor. Such a lawsuit could allege that manufacturers knew – or should have known — about the serious risks associated with their product.

The Lipitor diabetes lawsuits might further allege that the manufacturers failed to act on this information in a timely manner – or even actively downplayed the risks – preventing patients and their prescribing physicians from having all of the information they needed to make an informed decision regarding their medical care.

If you or someone you know took Lipitor and went on to experience serious complications like type-2 diabetes, your life could have been completely changed. Adapting to life with Lipitor diabetes includes major lifestyle changes like becoming more active and keeping a medication schedule.
