Stryker Hip Revision Complications Source of New Lawsuit

By Robert J. Boumis

Stryker hip replacement lawsuitAn Illinois man named Woodrow Claybon is suing the manufacturers of his metal-on-metal hip implant after suffering severe hip replacement surgery complications. The lawsuit was filed on May 22, 2013, against Howmedica Osteonics and the Stryker Corporation.

Claybon underwent a total hip arthroplasty or THA for his right hip in May of 2010. In this hip surgery procedure, the entire hip joint — including the ball joint of the upper leg bone, or femur, and the socket of the hip — are replaced by a hip implant. During the procedure, Claybon’s damaged hip socket was replaced a Stryker hip implant. The procedure was performed at Northwester Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

According to the Stryker hip lawsuit, “after a typical recovery and being relatively pain free, Woodrow returned to a high level of functioning, including being able to play 9 holes of golf regularly, walk long distances, ascend and descend stairs comfortably, and sleep through the night without pain.”

However, Claybon began to experience pain and after examination it was found that he had elevated cobalt levels in this blood, soft tissue reactions, and the formation of pseudotumors – tumor-like growths that can cause pain the failure of artificial hip implant. Claybon had to have positive bilateral hip aspirations, a procedure that removed the excessive fluid building up on his joints.

In February of 2013, Claybon had to undergo hip revision surgery. This is a surgical procedure consisting of removing dead tissue and replacing the Stryker hip implant with another brand and model.

According to the lawsuit, the surgical procedures have left Claybon with permanent disabilities, including a limp due to the extensive soft-tissue damage and reaction to the corroding metal of the hip implant. It is anticipated that he will have to undergo a similar surgery on his other hip once he recovers more from the first procedure.

The lawsuit points out that hip implants manufactured by Stryker have been the subject of warnings, recalls and reports of serious complications.

Claybon alleges in the Stryker hip replacement lawsuit that the manufacturers of device were negligent and fraudulent in their design, marketing and business practices. The lawsuit alleges the manufacturers knew – or reasonably should have known – that their medical devices could cause serious complications. The lawsuit further alleges that the company continued to sell, market and profit from the device despite this knowledge.

The case is Woodrow Claybon vs. Howmedica Osteonics Corporation, et al., Case No. 13-CV-3804, United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division.
