Stryker Hip Implant & Biomet Hip Replacement Lawsuits Grow
By Andrea Gressman
Despite an estimated 180 Stryker hip implant lawsuits now coordinated in the New Jersey Supreme Court, the number of Plaintiffs filing lawsuits over Stryker hip implant side effects continues to grow. Although the cases have not yet been classified as a mass tort, they have been centralized to prevent duplicate discovery and create a more efficient and speedy legal process. This is good news for victims seeking metal on metal hip implant lawsuit settlements from Stryker. Recipients of metal-on-metal hip implants have experienced certain side effects resulting from use of these hip replacement systems. These metal hip implant side effects include joint erosion, loosening of the implant and component deterioration, which can lead to metallosis. These metal hip implant side effects have caused pain to victims and have required them to undergo revision surgery to repair the metal hip implant.
Metallosis (metal poisoning) is a condition that arises when small bits of metal from the all-metal hip implant device enter surrounding tissue and bloodstream, resulting in pain, swelling, and disability.
Stryker Hip Implant Lawsuits Lead to Recall
Stryker voluntarily implemented recalls of two of its metal-on-metal hip implant models in July 2012: the ABG II and the Stryker Rejuvenate Modular. This is the second Stryker hip implant recall to be filed in four years, following a 2008 recall of the Stryker Trident hip replacement system.
Biomet M2A Magnum Hip Replacement Lawsuits Also Filed
Patients who underwent surgery for the Biomet M2A Magnum hip replacement have complaints similar to those made in Stryker hip replacement lawsuits, such as metal poisoning and loosened implants. There are at least 40 Biomet M2A Magnum hip implant lawsuits filed in courts nationwide alleging these side effects.
While no Stryker hip implant MDL or mass tort has been created, one has been proposed in the Biomet hip implant lawsuit litigation. If and when the Biomet coordination comes to a decision, it could have an impact on how courts handle future Stryker hip implant lawsuits.
A metal hip implant lawsuit MDL or mass tort makes it easier for Plaintiffs to bring a hip implant lawsuit against a company, as it allows them to share in the discovery phase. Mass torts and MDLs are similar to class action lawsuits, but differ in a few key ways. For example, in a metal hip implant class action lawsuit, Class Members must equally share any class action settlement award that is granted. In a metal hip implant lawsuit MDL, however, the settlements are awarded individually.
