SSRI Antidepressants & Birth Defects
By Christina Drury
Depression is a serious disease that affects millions of Americans each year. Some are able to overcome depression on their own, while others require the assistance of medications. A class of medications known as SSRI antidepressants is designed to help those through the rough patches of depression, and many people remain on them for years. The drug class includes such prescription drugs as Zoloft, Celexa and Paxil. While the SSRI antidepressants can help people get through depression, they have also been linked to quite a few SSRI side effects. Some SSRI side effects are so severe that they have sparked SSRI birth defect lawsuits, among others.
SSRI Birth Defect Study
Recently, a study published in the medical journal Human Reproduction provides proof that the SSRI birth defect lawsuits being filed against Zoloft are accurate. Several people have filed active Zoloft birth defect lawsuits alleging that using the SSRI antidepressant during pregnancy led to birth defects. The study also shows that Zoloft can lead to fertility problems along with severe side effects in women who are pregnant while using Zoloft.
The SSRI birth defect study published by Human Reproduction analyzed several studies that were available that not only examined the side effects of Zoloft on women who suffered from depression, but also on those who were dealing with fertility issues. The analysis showed that women who were on Zoloft were likely to experience any or all of the following SSRI pregnancy side effects:
- Miscarriages
- Premature Births
- Birth Defects
- Pregnancy Complications
- Trouble conceiving while on fertility meds
Also indicated in the study is that birth defects that were caused by Zoloft and similar drugs could be life-changing or even declared life-threatening and, as a result, many parents have chosen to file Zoloft birth defect lawsuits against Pfizer.
The conclusion of the study stated that the women who were on these drugs could have benefitted from the use of another antidepressant without having to sacrifice their fertility or unborn children.
Birth Defects Linked to SSRI Antidepressants
There is no one birth defect that is at the heart of Zoloft birth defect lawsuits. Instead, birth defect lawsuit attorneys are urging parents to file a Zoloft birth defect lawsuit if the mom was taking Zoloft while pregnant. Among the many different birth defects that are being considered:
- Cardiac Defects
- Cranial Defects
- Atrial Septal Defects
- Spina Bifida
- Autism
- Clubfoot
- Aorta Coarctation
Each of these birth defects may be a result of SSRI usage during pregnancy and you should have your case evaluated.
Compensation May be Available
If you have experienced any of the birth defects or other side effects due to the use of Zoloft while pregnant, you may be eligible to receive compensation.
