Risk Factors That Could Increase Tylenol Liver Damage Probability

By John Curran

Tylenol liver damage risk factorsIn the wake of Johnson & Johnson adding a warning to the bottle cap of the popular pain reliever Tylenol, consumers may be more aware of the potential for Tylenol liver damage side effects. However, it may not be clear from reading the drug safety information just what they need to do to minimize their risks.

The first step is to avoid heavy alcohol usage, although there still can be problems if the pain reliever is taken while the body is still processing spirits, such as during a hangover. Oddly, someone who is about to develop liver cirrhosis or has a history of drinking may be better protected by doing that, but in general it is best to keep the two separate, according to medical experts.

Most doctors who prescribe medications recommend taking them with a meal. However, even when taken with a meal, Tylenol liver damage may occur in patients who are either consuming an extremely low-calorie diet or are dealing with eating disorders due to higher levels of acetaminophen entering their system. Drinking caffeinated beverages in extremely high doses may also cause problems for people that use the over-the-counter remedy.

The most common risk factor for Tylenol liver damage, and the one that led Johnson & Johnson to update the bottle cap, is the use of Tylenol along with other products that also contain acetaminophen. Many opioid pain killers, for example, also include the chemical because of its different mechanism of action. Patients, however, may not be aware that they may be doubling up the amount of acetaminophen and could increase the likelihood of Tylenol liver damage side effects.

Problems with acetaminophen overdose usually occur within a few days of taking the medication at too high a dosage. Warning signs of acetaminophen overdose and/or Tylenol liver damage include dark urine or discolored eyes, as well as fatigue, nausea and loss of appetite. If there are significant changes in how one feels, the person should consult with a doctor immediately.

Despite the new warnings, a growing number of patients allege they were unaware of the possibility of liver damage while taking the popular pain reliever. Legal options may be available, but the first step is to get a legal consultation.
