Recognizing the Early Symptoms of Zithromax SJS May Save Your Life

By Anne Bucher

Zithromax SJS rashStevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and the related condition of toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are rare, potentially fatal reactions to medication. Although the condition is rare, there have been more instances of the affliction due simply to the widespread use of pharmaceuticals to treat a variety of conditions. Certain drugs seem to trigger the reactions, including antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications and anticonvulsants. Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to predict whether a patient is susceptible to SJS or TEN, as these conditions can affect people who had previously taken a drug without issue.

Zithromax (azithromycin) is one of the drugs that has been linked to an increased risk of SJS and TEN. This drug, manufactured by Pfizer, is one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotic medications in the U.S. Millions of people rely on Zithromax or Z-Pak treat a variety of conditions, including ear infections, respiratory infections, sexually transmitted diseases and skin infections.

TEN and SJS Complications Can Be Fatal

While rare, these complications are life-threatening. Early detection of Stevens Johnson Syndrome and treatment is the key to minimizing the effects of the condition. Because the initial SJS symptoms are the same as early flu symptoms, many physicians are unaware that their patients are suffering from SJS or TEN until the symptoms have spread throughout the body.

TEN and SJS complications may include:

  • Cellulitis
  • Blood infection
  • Blindness
  • Organ damage
  • Permanent skin damage
  • Death

Despite complaints from patients who suffered Zithromax SJS and TEN, Pfizer failed to include any warnings about the possibility of experiencing these life-threatening reactions. In 2012, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued an updated warning about the health risks posed by Zithromax. The agency acknowledged that several SJS and TEN fatalities had been reported in patients who had taken azithromycin, the main ingredient in Zithromax. The company has since updated its warning label to include information that Zithromax may cause Stevens Johnson Syndrome.

Recognize the Early Symptoms of Stevens Johnson Syndrome

Because SJS and TEN can strike even if you have previously taken Zithromax without issue, it is important to recognize the early symptoms of these conditions. Early detection may mean the difference between life and death. Symptoms of SJS and TEN may include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Burning eyes
  • Swelling of the face and/or tongue
  • Hives
  • Skin pain
  • Rash
  • Blisters around mucous membranes

If you experience any of these symptoms within a week or two of taking Zithromax, contact your doctor immediately.

Learn More about Your Legal Rights

If you or someone you care about has experienced SJS or TEN after taking Zithromax, you may be able to file a lawsuit against Pfizer. Manufacturers have a duty to warn their customers about possible health risks associated with their products. An increasing number of people are taking legal action against Pfizer for failing to warn about the potentially fatal Zithromax effects. By taking legal action, these plaintiffs are helping to hold drug manufacturers accountable for their products’ safety.
