Propecia Sexual Side Effects May Last Years

By Anne Bucher

Propecia sexual side effectsFinasteride is used for the treatment of male pattern baldness. It is sold under the brand name Propecia, which is manufactured by Merck Pharmaceuticals. Propecia works by blocking the conversion of testosterone into DHT, a hormone that causes hair loss. Propecia quickly became popular as a remedy to treat male pattern baldness.

Propecia Sexual Side Effects

Despite its popularity, Propecia has been linked to sexual side effects. Many men have complained that they have suffered significant Propecia sexual side effects, including:

  • Loss of libido
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Difficulty reaching orgasm
  • Painful genitals
  • Abnormal ejaculation
  • Shrinking genitals
  • Impotence

Many Propecia users have also complained that they have suffered from psychological side effects such as depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts after taking Propecia. They claim that their doctors did not mention the potential risks of these side effects. Plaintiffs in growing Propecia lawsuits claim they would not have taken Propecia had they known about the risks associated with the product.

FDA Warns that Propecia Sexual Side Effects May Linger after Treatment is Stopped

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved Propecia in 1997. Although men reported Propecia sexual side effects during clinical trials, Merck insisted that these side effects would resolve once the patient stopped taking the drug. Over the next 13 years, the FDA received hundreds of reports from men who had experienced Propecia sexual dysfunction. Nearly 60 percent of these men reported that the sexual side effects continued even after they stopped taking the medication.

In April 2012, the FDA announced that Merck would update the Propecia label to indicate that some men who used Propecia suffered from sexual dysfunction even after they ceased treatment. Some studies have shown that, for some men, these Propecia sexual side effects may last for several years after the patient stops taking the drug. Other studies have indicated that the sexual side effects may be permanent.

If You Have Suffered from Propecia Sexual Dysfunction, Seek Legal Help

Merck has been sued by hundreds of plaintiffs who allege that Propecia has caused them to suffer persistent sexual side effects, even after they stopped taking the drug. The federal Propecia lawsuits have been consolidated into federal courts in New York. Other lawsuits are pending throughout the U.S. and in other countries. A Propecia class action lawsuit has recently been approved in Canada. These plaintiffs are seeking compensation for their medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other damages they experienced after taking Propecia.

By taking legal action against Merck, you could receive compensation for your medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages you experienced after taking Propecia. Thousands of men have filed Propecia lawsuits, alleging that Merck was aware of the long-lasting sexual side effects but failed to provide adequate warning to physicians and patients. They claim that, had they known about the risk of experiencing sexual side effects, they would not have opted to take Propecia.
