Pradaxa Victim Hospitalized & Requires Blood Transfusion
By Jessica Tyner
Robert Connelly is the latest Pradaxa victim to come forward with his nightmare experience. Connelly claims his doctor didn’t warn him about the possible side effects of Pradaxa, including internal bleeding, when he was prescribed the drug in May 2011. Connelly took Pradaxa until September 2011 when he was hospitalized for severe internal gastrointestinal bleeding.
Connelly’s internal bleeding was so serious that he needed blood transfusions for five units of blood, was hospitalized for five days, and doctors also scheduled a colonoscopy and EGD. Beyond the expensive stay and procedures, Connelly is suing the makers of Pradaxa for mental and physical anguish. He’ll require ongoing medical care to ensure the gastrointestinal bleeding is in check, which will require him to possibly take time off of work, further impacting his income.
Bleeding Victim Files Pradaxa Injury Lawsuit
Like other Pradaxa victims, there are a host of complaints Connelly is filing against Pradaxa makers. These include a liability breach, failure to warn, negligence, and breach of warranty. The damages he’s seeking include economic damages, non-economic, punitive and actual. Connelly’s experience isn’t unique, and Boehringer, the company that manufactures Pradaxa, is facing a number of class action lawsuits with similar victims at the helm. Doctors often don’t warn patients about the dangers of Pradaxa because, according to plaintiffs, appropriate warnings aren’t included on the packaging.
According to Becker’s Hospital Review, the average cost for one day in a U.S. hospital can reach $2,025. This does not include any testing, drugs or special services — this is simply the cost for a bed in a hospital. Given that Connelly stayed five days, that’s over $10,000, not including the colonoscopy, blood transfusion and EGD. For a Pradaxa sufferer without insurance, that’s an incredible sum. It’s easy to see why so many Pradaxa victims are seeking compensation, considering many likely would have requested an alternative if they knew the risks.
Why Pradaxa?
Pradaxa is a blood thinner that works all too well in some cases. It became a popular alternative for Coumadin in recent years. Blood thinners in general can be challenging, but the real issue with Pradaxa is there is no antidote to the uncontrolled internal bleeding that can sometimes occur. This Pradaxa side effect is what can cause severe complications like Connelly’s that can lead to hospitalization and blood transfusions.
Coumadin complications can be reversed with something as simple as Vitamin K, but that’s ineffective with Pradaxa. Instead, when a patient suffers Pradaxa side effects, immediate hospitalization is in order. In December 2011, the FDA issued a warning about Pradaxa side effects, and that motivated Boehringer to include additional safety warnings in January 2012. However, for victims like Connelly, those warnings came too late.
Were You Given Pradaxa?
Pradaxa is a commonly prescribed blood thinner. If you were prescribed it and suffered side effects, you might have a Pradaxa legal claim. Hospitalization is expensive, scary and can lead to years of ongoing check-ins. You may deserve compensation for your experience.
