Oklahoma Woman Sues Over Failed Vaginal Mesh Surgery

By Jessica Tyner

vaginal mesh lawsuitLori Eggenberg is the latest vaginal mesh victim to come forward and sue her implant manufacturer for her injuries.

According to a local news station in Oklahoma, “hundreds” of women in Oklahoma alone are joining forces and seeking compensation for their injuries caused by vaginal mesh implants used to treat pelvic organ prolapse, stress urinary incontinence and other issues. Eggenberg received her bladder sling implant in 2010 and, at the time, believed she was lucky to be getting the most current and assumingly effective solution for her incontinence.

Vaginal slings and bladder slings are designed for women who have already given birth and either have an organ prolapse or chronic incontinence. The news station reports that Eggenberg and the thousands of others just like her had no idea what the potential dangerous, expensive — and extremely painful – side effects of their vaginal mesh implants might be, which includes eating into soft tissue and literally tearing a woman apart internally.

What Vaginal Mesh Patients Weren’t Told

While the reasons why most women get vaginal mesh implants are embarrassing and annoying, it’s doubtful that anyone would sign up for an implant surgery if they knew the risks of surgical mesh. Mesh victims claim they weren’t told about the potential side effects and never received adequate warnings. According to one vaginal mesh injury attorney, these synthetic mesh implants become extremely sharp and hard, and effectively are like inserting a knife into someone’s body.

It’s also important to note that some vaginal mesh implant side effects can be long lasting. Some women are never able to have sex again, and there’s a report of at least one vaginal mesh implant causing a divorce because the husband couldn’t live in a sexless marriage his entire life.

The Early 2008 Warning

Vaginal sling and bladder sling implants have been readily available for years, but the FDA first warned about the potential side effects of surgical mesh in 2008. At that time, there were over 1,000 reported cases of vaginal mesh implants becoming critically embedded in soft tissues and/or organs. The results of this complication ranges from infections to vaginal scarring, and oftentimes the damage is permanent.

The FDA continued to try to warn women again in 2011, estimating that 10 percent of all mesh implants fail. While the FDA does what it can, that does little to help vaginal mesh victims like Eggenberg who was not told by her physician or the manufacturer of her implant about its potential risks. Hundreds of vaginal mesh injury lawsuits are based on the claim that doctors can’t warn patients because the manufacturer does not include proper warning labels.

Have You Been Injured by a Vaginal Mesh Implant?

Even if you had a negative vaginal mesh experience many years ago, or even if you had a bad experience after the FDA’s warnings, you may have a vaginal mesh legal claim. A shocking percentage of these surgeries fail, and if you had any negative side effects at all, then you may qualify to seek compensation for your injuries. If you’ve been injured by a vaginal mesh implant, you deserve to be compensated.
