Obamacare’s Affect on Mirena IUD Side Effect Reports

By John Curran

Mirena IUD problemsWomen’s rights supporters hailed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care ACT (PPACA) for increasing access to birth control options that would limit unwanted pregnancies, yet an unintended consequence may be an increase in Mirena IUD side effects and those of related intrauterine devices.

The concept is a good one for people who believe that women should be able to choose when to start a family, especially considering sobering statistics regarding the high number of unplanned pregnancies and the affect these can have on a family. However, Mirena IUD side effects can be dangerous and tens of thousands of women have already dealt with uterine perforation and spontaneous migration of the device.

While drug maker Bayer Pharmaceuticals disputes the latter claim, numerous lawsuit plaintiffs have said they experienced problems like these. More importantly, there are other long-term contraceptive options that do not include Mirena IUD spontaneous migration risks and women can also try older oral contraceptives. Bayer has recently released a new IUD product, Skyla, that is designed for use by those who have not had a child, but it is unclear whether or not it is safer than Mirena.

American doctors see a number of patients, and in the case of gynecologists, they frequently focus on oral contraceptives and intrauterine devices. It may be easy to gloss over potential risks involved with pills like Yaz or Yasmin and just as much with IUDs like Mirena. The number of patients they will see will increase with mandatory coverage of these medical needs as a result of PPACA.

As noted above, it is a good move to allow women who want to take control of their bodies. However, it will be up to them and their gynecologists to ensure they are aware of the risks and choose the best option given their needs and medical history. However, if a problem occurs, these women may be able to hold Bayer accountable for their injuries through a Mirena product liability lawsuit.
