NuvaRing Lawsuit Update: All Health Risk Studies Must Be Disclosed by Merck

Recently the federal NuvaRing lawsuit MDL judge ruled that the drug manufacturer must disclose any and all NuvaRing studies. These NuvaRing studies had been previously sealed in order to protect the reputation of Merck, the birth control implant manufacturer. It will also undoubtedly affect the outcome of the NuvaRing lawsuits as they are set to begin trial on May 6, 2013.
The Number of Reports Continue to Pile Up Regarding NuvaRing Side Effects
It was revealed in a CBS News San Diego report issued on September 21, 2012 that there are more than 1,000 NuvaRing side effect complaints currently on record with the FDA. These include blood clot injures and other negative NuvaRing side effects – including death.
Many prominent medical journals and organizations have issued reports and studies in addition to the CBS News San Diego report linking NuvaRing usage with increased risks of blood clots. Some of these include the following:
* Last October, a report was issued by the FDA entitled, “Combined Hormonal Contraceptives (CHCs) and the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease Endpoints.” In the report, it was shown that the risks of blood clots could increase by as much as 56% due to vaginal ring contraceptives.
* On May 10, 2012, a Danish study was publish in the British Medical Journal which suggested, when compared to oral contraceptives, there was a link between vaginal rings like NuvaRing and the risk of blood clots increasing by as much as 90%.
* On June 14, 2012, a study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in which a 2.5 to 3-fold risk of blood clots could be related to vaginal ring contraceptives.
NuvaRing Lawsuit MDL
There have been so many NuvaRing lawsuits filed that the cases have been consolidated into a federal Multi-District Litigation court in Missouri. The U.S. Panel on Multidistrict Litigation reported on September 5, 2012, that so far the number of NuvaRing lawsuits that have been filed has reached more than 1,000. It is now being referred to as In re: NuvaRing Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 1964, JPML, Eastern District Missouri.
