New Yasmin Side Effects Lawsuit Added to Multidistrict Litigation
By John Curran
A Minnesota woman is seeking damages from Bayer Corporation, arguing that the company over-promoted the popular birth control pill Yaz while minimizing the risks of blood clotting issues.
Plaintiff Callista Arnzen’s Yaz lawsuit notes that Bayer promoted the use of the family of pills, which also includes Yasmin, Beyaz and Ocella, as an alternative to older oral contraceptives because of the reduced likelihood of side effects like weight gain and acne. However, both her Yaz lawsuit and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) have noted that the first round of commercials failed to address known issues regarding excessive potassium levels and the resulting possibility of clotting.
Arnzen is one of a growing number of women who allege that they have suffered from Yasmin blood clot side effects. A large number of these Yaz lawsuits have been consolidated into multidistrict litigation (MDL) in U.S. District Court in Illinois. At last count there were more than 10,000 lawsuits pending in the MDL. Counts against the drug maker include defective manufacturing and design, failure to warn, negligence and fraud, among others.
Earlier Yaz lawsuits have alleged that the dual-hormone contraceptive led to clotting issues that manifested themselves as Yaz stroke side effects, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism side effects. There have been several dozen instances of fatalities reported allegedly as a result of these conditions. For a majority of women, they were allegedly either disabled by stroke or required ongoing treatment with blood thinners to resolve other medical issues.
The Yaz blood clot side effects lawsuit is Callista Arnzen v. Bayer Corporation, et al., Case No. 13-cv-10880, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois.
