New Propecia Sexual Dysfunction Lawsuit Joins MDL

By Christina Drury

Propecia side effects in menMale pattern baldness is something that many men suffer from each year and it is widely due to genetics. For some men, the feeling that they are losing their hair is too much to take and they look to drugs like Propecia to prevent more hair loss and to regrow the hair that is already gone.

Unfortunately for some men, using Propecia has lead to devastating sexual side effects. As more men learn that their impotence and other sexual disorders are caused by their Propecia use, they are coming forward to sue drug maker Merck for failure to warn about these risks. While all federal Propecia lawsuits were consolidated in April of 2012, the list of plaintiffs has not yet come to a conclusion as more men seek to recover damages suffered at the hands of Propecia side effects.

Arizona Plaintiff Latest to Join Propecia Lawsuit MDL

Seeking in excess of $75,000 in damages from Merck, a new Propecia lawsuit plaintiff who hails from Arizona contends that Merck failed to warn users of the serious side effects that may be caused by Propecia. With no prior sexual dysfunction or fertility issues prior to his Propecia use, the plaintiff was shocked to discover that while on the medication — and even after discontinuing Propecia after 18 months of use — he suffers from several Propecia side effects, including:

  • Loss of libido
  • Orgasm disorder
  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety

He has racked up several thousands of dollars in medical bills as a result of these Propecia side effects and states it is not unreasonable to assume that he will need ongoing care for these symptoms. At this point, after filling his Propecia lawsuit on March 28, 2013, his lawyer states that the plaintiff is unsure whether his injuries will ever subside or heal.

Merck Downplays Seriousness of Propecia Side Effects

Merck, like most drug manufacturers, spent millions of dollars targeting men who suffered from hair loss as a means to boost their profits. The method worked, as sales soared and increased nearly $200 million after their marketing tactics were deployed. However, during their marketing campaigns they either failed to mention or seriously downplayed the side effects of Propecia that could result in temporary or permanent sexual dysfunction. Until 2012, the label on Propecia stated that less than 2% of men who used the product would suffer from sexual side effects, with the drug affecting 0.3% by the fifth year of usage.

The plaintiff is alleging in the Propecia lawsuit Merck was negligent, breached its warranty, and was negligent in their representation of the drug in violation of the Arizona consumer fraud act.

Men Joining Propecia Lawsuit MDL to Recover Damages

While some men may be permanently injured in terms of sexual dysfunction, they are joining the Propecia lawsuit MDL against Merck to recover both compensatory and punitive damages. Compensation may be eligible for pain and suffering, ongoing medical expenses, prior medical expenses, treatment and mental or physical anguish.
