New Pradaxa Lawsuit Filed by Hospitalized Bleeding Victim
By Christina Drury
As if 120 pending Pradaxa lawsuits weren’t enough for Boehringer Ingelheim to worry about, a new lawsuit has been filed on behalf of Robert Connelly, who claims he spent five days in the hospital due to Pradaxa-induced internal bleeding.
Connelly says that when he began taking Pradaxa in May of 2011, there was no warning label on the box or issued to physicians or consumers about the dangers of internal bleeding that could occur from Pradaxa use. Originally filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, the courts have transferred Connelly’s Pradaxa lawsuit to the multidistrict litigation (MDL) taking place in the U.S. District Court of Southern District of Illinois.
Plaintiff Spent Five Days Hospitalized Due to Pradaxa Internal Bleeding
Shortly after being prescribed Pradaxa, Connelly found himself in the hospital under a five-day stay. The cause of his hospital stay was due to internal bleeding that he says was caused by his use of the blood-thinner Pradaxa. During these five days, he had to receive five units of blood transfusion as well as undergo medical procedures including a colonoscopy and an EGD. Connelly will have to undergo continuous monitoring to ensure that he does not suffer any more internal bleeding, and he states in the lawsuit that he suffered mental as well as physical anguish due to these injuries.
Connelly is seeking punitive damages as well as economic, non-economic and actual damages through the Pradaxa lawsuit. He is alleging claims of negligence, breached the implied warranty, failure to warn and strict liability.
Pradaxa Linked to Over 500 Deaths
Originally introduced as a competitor to warfarin (Coumadin), Pradaxa has been linked to hundreds of reports of severe bleeding side effects. Despite numerous inquiries from consumers and physicians, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not issued a warning indicating there is a greater risk from taking Pradaxa compared to warfarin. This comes despite the fact that Pradaxa does not have a known antidote to internal bleeding, where warfarin users can have bleeding reversed with Vitamin K.
It wasn’t until late 2011 that the FDA notified the general public about the potential of dangerous internal bleeding from Pradaxa. When the Pradaxa label was updated in 2012, it was already too late for many, including Connelly, who was fortunate to survive his ordeal. Others were not so fortunate, and more than 500 deaths have been linked to Pradaxa internal bleeding injuries.
