Natural Supplements May Increase Risk of Tylenol Liver Damage Side Effects
By John Curran
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recently recalled diet pills marketed under the OxyElite Pro brand name after investigators linked it to reports of liver damage in several states. However, as a recent medical conference indicates, there are a variety of so-called natural or herbal supplements that can increase the possibility of Tylenol side effects, which can include liver damage if too much is taken.
While solely focusing on a single patient, each of the three reports at the American College of Gastroenterology annual scientific meeting linked the supplement to liver damage. In the first case, a middle-aged woman was looking to lose weight with the use of a supplement including herbal supplements containing green tea extract. As with previous reports, the compound is linked to liver damage that resembles Tylenol side effects.
Similarly, a combination of black cohosh and significant drinking led to cirrhosis in another woman and the doctor who treated her said that the cirrhosis was less damaging when she stopped using the supplement. A similar report involved a patient who stopped taking a popular energy drink and who, according to a doctor at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, did not present with symptoms of alcohol-related diseases including cirrhosis.
At a time when many people are hesitant to use prescription medications, herbal supplements have an increasing appeal. Yet while they are all-natural, that does not mean that they do not have side effects. Patients who are taking pain relievers that contain acetaminophen should be aware that Tylenol side effects are a possibility and could be exacerbated by interactions with alcohol, other medications and even supplements.
Recently, Tylenol lawsuit attorneys have noted that manufacturer updated label on the bottle cap of the medication, warning consumers to read the drug safety insert for information about the potential for liver problems based on a variety of factors.
Many people may not have seen earlier warnings or been unaware of these risks. Tens of thousands visit the emergency room each year due to complications regarding Tylenol. Legal remedies may be available to them, but the first step is to find out if you are eligible to do so.
