Mississippi Woman Takes on Pfizer in Lipitor Diabetes Lawsuit
By Amanda Antell
Mississippi plaintiff Ruthie M. Calamese is suing Pfizer, claiming she developed type-2 diabetes after taking the cholesterol drug Lipitor. The Lipitor lawsuit accuses Pfizer of manufacturing, promoting, distributing, and selling a defective product which caused harm to the plaintiff and potentially hundreds of other patients.
Calamese was prescribed Lipitor by her physicians in 2000 to treat her high cholesterol and to reduce her risk of heart disease. Despite living within a healthy diet and exercise schedule recommended by her doctors, she was still diagnosed with the life-altering disease in 2005. Pfizer made no effort to contact her or her prescribing physicians to warn them of this possible Lipitor side effect; had Calamese been aware of this risk, she would not have taken the drug to begin with, her Lipitor lawsuit states.
Lipitor Side Effects Ignored
First approved in 1996, Lipitor was manufactured by Pfizer to lower cholesterol in patients. It works by inhibiting a certain enzyme that helps absorb cholesterol from the sugars and fat in the body. By disabling this function, the body’s cholesterol level stays elevated and controlled, allowing the patient to lead a healthy lifestyle.
Unfortunately, soon after the drug’s release, numerous reports of Lipitor-induced diabetes came in, stating that post-menopausal women had developed type-2 diabetes after taking Lipitor.
Numerous studies have been conducted to observe this potential connection, and many have found conflicting results. Ultimately, the results led the FDA to issue a warning to Pfizer to update Lipitor’s label in February 2012 to include that Lipitor may increase certain glucose levels, which have been linked to type-2 diabetes development.
Calamese and her Lipitor lawsuit lawyer allege that Pfizer has known about the risk of Lipitor diabetes but failed to warn patients or their doctors about this risk.
Due to the fact that the plaintiff or her physicians could not have reasonably known about the possibility of Lipitor causing type-2 diabetes, Pfizer is being held accountable for her current medical condition. At the time of her prescription, the plaintiff and her physicians were relying on the misleading information provided to them by Pfizer, which led them to believe that the drug had been reasonably safe for the plaintiff to use.
Calamese is suing Pfizer for false advertising, fraud, concealing information, and negligence in product safety and handling. She is seeking over $75,000 in damages for medical compensation, recognition of her pain and suffering, and other punitive damages.
