Mirena Lawsuits Increasing Over IUD Problems
By Christina Drury
The hits just keep on coming for Bayer, the manufacturer of the Mirena IUD. According to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), over 45,000 complaints have been lodged by women who use the contraceptive device. Among the chief complaints is the fact that the Mirena IUD can sometimes spontaneously dislodge and cause pelvic pain, often necessitating the need for surgery.
Potential Mirena Side Effects that Were Disclosed
There are plenty of Mirena side effects that have been recorded since the IUD was approved in 2000. These Mirena side effects range from minor to severe – those that require surgery to remove the device. Among the complaints, approximately 6% of them have resulted in serious injury that required surgery in order to remove the device and those that caused permanent injury.
Minor Mirena side effects that were previously warned by Bayer:
* Headaches
* Mood changes
* Nausea
* Breast tenderness
These are all minor side effects caused by Mirena that the manufacturer warned should disappear within the first few months after the device is inserted. Bayer also warned that the IUD may migrate if there happened to be a perforation of the uterus when the device is implanted.
Mirena Side Effects that are Cause for Filing a Lawsuit
While there were Mirena side effects that Bayer warned of, there have also been complications that women were not aware of when choosing the IUD. Nowhere on the label does it state that the Mirena IUD may expel itself or may dislodge if the uterus is not perforated. Another severe Mirena side effect is noted in some women who have had vaginal hemorrhages as a result of using the IUD.
When the device dislodges and migrates throughout the body, it can affect internal organs and potentially cause injury to these organs. In some instances, women who visited their doctors to disclose pelvic pain experienced the horror of not being able to locate the device, even with the aid of an ultrasound machine. For these women, laparoscopic surgery became necessary in order to locate and subsequently remove the Mirena IUD.
How to Take Action
Because of the enormous number of Mirena injury lawsuits that have been filed, the manufacturer Bayer – has requested that all of the lawsuits be consolidated in a New Jersey Superior Court. If you are looking to file a claim due to Mirena side effects that you experienced, it is best to work with an attorney who has already been active in the process due to the specialized nature of the case.
If you are looking to file a Mirena IUD lawsuit or class action lawsuit because you or a loved one has suffered Mirena side effects due to the use of the IUD, you can determine how to take action by visiting our Mirena IUD Injury Class Action Lawsuit Settlement Investigation Page.
