Mirena IUD Migration Can Have Debilitating Consequences
By Anne Bucher
The Mirena IUD, manufactured by Bayer, is a long-lasting contraceptive device that is implanted into a woman’s uterus. It is effective for up to five years. The device was heavily marketed as a more convenient alternative to birth control pills and quickly soared in popularity.
While Mirena was originally recommended for women who had already given birth, the device has recently been recommended for younger women, including teenagers. However, the safety of this recommendation has come into question as an increasing number of women have come forward to complain of Mirena IUD complications, including:
- Pelvic pain
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
- Infection
- Vaginal erosion
- Intrauterine pregnancy
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Uterine perforation
- Organ perforation
Mirena IUD Migration Can Cause Serious Health Complications
Most of the Mirena IUD side effects occur when a woman’s body attempts to reject the device as a foreign object. In some cases, the device migrates outside the uterus and perforates the organ. A migrating Mirena IUD can also perforate other organs, creating severe health consequences. If you are currently using the Mirena IUD and experience unusual pain or bleeding, these may be symptom that the Mirena IUD has migrated. If you cannot locate the strings on your Mirena IUD, you should visit your doctor immediately. If your doctor cannot find the device in your uterus, an ultrasound or x-ray may be used to locate the device.
When the Mirena IUD migrates, it could become embedded in the uterus or cervix. It can also perforate the uterus and become lodged in the abdominal cavity or other part of the body. The migrating device can put a woman at risk of serious health consequences. Surgery is typically required to remove a Mirena IUD that has migrated. As a result, women have been faced with significant medical expenses, debilitating pain, lost wages and permanent physical injuries. Many women feel that they were not warned about the potential for device migration. Had they known about these risks, they would have selected a safer form of contraception.

If you or someone you love has experienced Mirena IUD migration or other complications, you are not alone. The FDA has already received more than 40,000 complaints about Mirena IUD side effects, a number that is certain to increase as more women become aware of the product’s risks.
Dozens of Mirena IUD lawsuits have been consolidated into multidistrict litigation (MDL). The plaintiffs in these lawsuits accuse Bayer of manufacturing a defective product. They believe that Bayer was aware of the risks posed by the Mirena IUD but failed to provide adequate warning to doctors and patients. As a result, numerous women have suffered painful and debilitating injuries from the Mirena IUD.
