Mirena IUD Complications Include Uterine Perforation
By Anne Bucher
An intrauterine device (IUD) is a contraceptive device that is inserted into the uterus. Once it is put into place, the IUD releases hormones that prevent the woman from becoming pregnant. IUDs have been touted as a convenient and effective form of long-lasting birth control. Most IUDs can remain implanted in the uterus for up to five years. However, many women have come forward to complain of serious health complications from one popular IUD called Mirena. The Mirena IUD, manufactured by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, has been the target of many of these lawsuits.
In 2009, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) warned that the Mirena IUD could cause serious side effects, including:
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Intrauterine pregnancy
- Perforation of the uterus
The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation has ordered all federal Mirena IUD lawsuits to be consolidated in a New York federal court. The pretrial proceedings will be handled by Judge Cathy Siebel. The plaintiffs in these federal Mirena IUD lawsuits complain that the device migrated from its original position and perforated their uterus, causing severe injuries. They allege Bayer failed to provide adequate warnings about the potentially deadly risks posed by Mirena.
Mirena IUD Poses Risk of Uterine Perforation
Uterine perforation refers to the puncturing of the uterus. It can occur with any intrauterine medical procedure, including the placement of a Mirena IUD. When the Mirena IUD punctures the uterus, it can migrate out of its original position and cause damage to other internal organs. In some cases, it can move in to the abdominal cavity and perforate the bladder, bowel or intestines. Uterine perforation can lead to significant health problems, including infection, infertility, scarring, and even death.
If the Mirena IUD migrates out of its original location, surgical removal of the device will be required to prevent further injuries. Women who experience Mirena IUD migration are often faced with hefty medical expenses and must take time off work to recover. Many women complain of severe pain and emotional distress. In some cases, the injuries suffered from the Mirena IUD migration can be permanent.
Learn about Your Legal Options
Many women who have suffered serious Mirena IUD injuries have sued Bayer for failing to provide adequate warnings about the risks associated with the product. The plaintiffs claim Bayer promoted the Mirena IUD but did not disclose information about the severe health risks posed by the device.
If you or someone you care about has suffered from Mirena IUD injuries such as organ perforation, infertility or more, you may be able to file a lawsuit against Bayer.
