An Oklahoma man recently filed a lawsuit against Janssen Pharmaceuticals over serious Xarelto gastrointestinal bleeding complications.
The plaintiff, Charles I., began taking Xarelto at the direction of his doctor in December 2012 in order to reduce his risk of stroke and other health complications, including systemic embolism.
Unfortunately, just a few months after he began taking Xarelto, Charles was admitted to the hospital due to serious Xarelto gastrointestinal bleeding problems. He remained in the hospital for a total of three days, and his doctors took him off of Xarelto in response to his injuries. Later, Charles chose to file a claim against Janssen Pharmaceuticals over his Xarelto gastrointestinal bleeding problems.
This Xarelto gastrointestinal bleeding lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including negligence, strict products liability, breach of express and implied warranties, fraudulent misrepresentation and concealment, and negligent misrepresentation.
Background of Xarelto
Xarelto is a popular anticoagulant manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a prominent subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. It was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on July 1, 2011 in order to treat deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, and was later approved to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism. Xarelto is also known by its generic name, rivaroxaban.
This Xarelto lawsuit and others like it claim that Janssen was actually aware of the Xarelto gastrointestinal bleeding complications linked with their drug, yet failed to warn the public and the medical community.
Blood thinners are used to prevent blood clotting, which can lead to extremely serious conditions that, in some cases, can end up being fatal. In general, blood clots are dangerous for your body. However, in some instances, blood clots can actually perform a life-saving function. In extreme internal bleeding situations, the body uses blood clotting to slow the bleeding, which can prevent an injured party from losing too much blood before medical help can arrive on the scene.
Blood thinners like Xarelto, however, can actually lead to more excessive bleeding, including Xarelto gastrointestinal bleeding.
Xarelto Side Effects
Plaintiffs involved in recent Xarelto gastrointestinal bleeding lawsuits include a variety of serious and fatal Xarelto side effects, including
- Gastrointestinal bleeding (GI bleeding)
- Rectal bleeding
- Uterine bleeding
- Hemorrhaging
- Brain hemorrhaging
- Hermarthrosis (bleeding into joint spaces)
- Bloody stool
- Minor bleeding (nosebleeds, heavy menstrual flow)
Unfortunately, these serious Xarelto side effects can lead to permanent injury or even death.
