Have you experienced any Lamictal rash symptoms after taking the popular anticonvulsant drug? The anticonvulsant Lamictal has been linked with some serious Lamictal rash symptoms, including a reaction known as hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH).
Basics of Lamictal
Lamictal (generic name lamotrigine) is an anticonvulsant manufactured by the pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline. Lamictal was granted FDA approval in 1994, and has since become a widely-used treatment for epilepsy in adults and children alike. Lamictal has been approved for use in patients two years and older, and can be used to bipolar disorder
Unfortunately, Lamictal is not without serious complications, some of which may be long-lasting or even fatal in nature.
Lamictal Rash Symptoms
Despite the popularity of Lamictal, the medication has been associated with a number of major side effects. Reported Lamictal side effects include blurred vision, chest pain, sleeping problems, dizziness, fatigue, head pain, confusion, and more. Patients may experience even more severe drug reactions to Lamictal, including Lamictal rash symptoms.
In fact, according to clinical trials, around 10 percent of Lamictal patients end up experiencing some form of Lamictal rash symptoms. In many cases, Lamictal rash symptoms may go away on their own, but in others, these rashes may indicate a more serious or permanent condition.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a safety warning in April 2018 regarding Lamictal rash symptoms, which may indicate a number of serious conditions, including hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). The FDA required GlaxoSmithKline to update the warning label of Lamictal to include the risk of HLH.
Essentially, HLH is a rare but severe immune system reaction in which the body’s immune system—which fights infections—is forced to activate excessively and unnecessarily. HLH can cause serious inflammation that may even lead to hospitalization and death. This risk is heightened if the reaction isn’t diagnosed or treated early enough. Those suffering from HLH may experience a persistent fever, rash, enlarged spleen, and other symptoms.
Patients may first experience Lamictal rash symptoms days after taking Lamictal, or weeks thereafter.
Lamictal rash symptoms may indicate HLH or a number of other serious or potentially deadly side effects, including Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS), Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN), and more. Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a skin condition that attacks the skin and mucous membranes, leading to blisters and burns. TEN is a more severe form of this condition, and more deadly.
