GranuFlo Lawsuit Blames Fresenius for 2008 Death
By Andrea Gressman
A Florida woman has filed a GranuFlo wrongful death lawsuit against the manufacturer, claiming that the dry acid concentrate administered to her husband at a kidney dialysis center in 2008 led to his death.
In an October 4, 2012 federal court GranuFlo lawsuit, Gloria Smith stated that Fresenius USA Inc. knew of the cardiac risks related to its GranuFlo dialysis treatment after its introduction in 2003. However, many years went by before they brought the vital information of GranuFlo’s heart attack side effect risks to the public’s attention and, as a result, they are now responsible for her husband’s death.
Severe GranuFlo/NaturaLyte Side Effects Lead to Class I Recall
Both GranuFlo and NaturaLyte have become popular products used in kidney dialysis and hemodialysis. They have been used to treat thousands of patients that have experienced kidney failure. However, GranuFlo and NaturaLyte have now been linked to a number of serious side effects. These include heat attack, death, as well as other severe side effects.
These side effects have become so prevalent amongst NaturaLyte and GranuFlo users that a Class I recall had to be issued. A Class I recall is the most serious type of recall available and is only used for those types of products that would be considered potentially deadly.
GranuFlo Side Effects Cause Hundreds of Deaths
Gloria Smith is not alone in her claim that GranuFlo and NaturaLyte caused the death of her loved one. Since these two kidney dialysis drugs were placed on the market it is estimated that they have been responsible for hundreds of deaths. In a November 2011 internal memo that was somehow leaked to the public, Fresenius Medical Care, the manufacturer of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte, stated that there were as many as 941 deaths in 2010 of kidney dialysis patients at Fresenius medical clinics due to GranuFlo and NaturaLyte being administered at an incorrect dosage. Many of these deaths were caused by heart attacks, cardiac arrhythmia, cardiopulmonary arrest, and other heart related side effects of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte.
Other Side Effects of GranuFlo Result in Product Recall
There are a number of additional GranuFlo side effects that prompted the FDA Class I Recall. Despite the heart attack side effects linked to GranuFlo, this drug has also been linked to the following side effects as well:
* Metabolic alkalosis – which can cause heart attack, stroke, and even death
* Low blood pressure
* Low blood oxygen
* Irregular heartbeat
