FDA Warns Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella & Beyaz Users About Blood Clot Risks
By Sarah Pierce
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a press release April 10, 2012 stating it found evidence that drospirenone-containing contraceptives like Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella and Beyaz may be associated with a higher risk of blood clots than other forms of birth control. The announcement comes as no surprise to thousands of women who have suffered blood clot injuries such as pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, heart attack and stroke after taking Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella, Beyaz and other drospirenone-containing birth control pills. Nearly 10,000 lawsuits have been filed in the United States claiming serious side effects from these types of birth control medications.
Drospirenone is a newly-developed “fourth generation” synthetic version of the female hormone progesterone, commonly known as progestin. After reviewing studies evaluating the risk of blood clots associated with taking birth control pills containing drospirenone, the FDA determined nearly a three-fold increased risk of blood clots compared to older birth control pills containing levonorgestrel or other form of progestin. As a result, the FDA is updating the warning labels on the following birth control pills to include information about the risk of blood clots:
Yasmin
Yaz
Ocella
Beyaz
Gianvi
Loryna
Syeda
Zarah
Safyral
The FDA is also recommending that women consult their doctors about their risk for blood clots prior to taking a drospirenone birth control.
The warning follows thousands of lawsuits filed by women who suffered blood clot injuries caused by these types of birth control. To date, more than 10,000 Yasmin, Yaz, Ocella and Beyaz lawsuits have been filed across the country by women who have suffered serious side effects from these pills. In addition to suffering blood clots, these lawsuits cite a litany of side effects and injuries, including:
Heart attack
Stroke
Pulmonary embolism
Deep vein thrombosis
Sudden death
All lawsuits concerning Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella and Beyaz have been consolidated into a multi-district litigation (MDL) before Judge David L. Herndon in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois. Any Yasmin lawsuit, Yaz lawsuit, Ocella lawsuit or Beyaz lawsuit filed from now on will be transferred to this MDL for pre-trial proceedings. While lawsuits in the Yasmin/Yaz MDL are handled in a similar manner to that of a class action lawsuit, there are some key differences. For one, each lawsuit retains its status as an individual case, with each Plaintiff retaining her own attorney. As such, each Plaintiff will receive her own individual lawsuit settlement based on the severity of her injuries, instead of sharing a class action lawsuit settlement. If the MDL does not resolve during the pretrial proceedings, the individual lawsuits will be returned to the courts where they were originally filed to try and reach a resolution on their own.
