FDA Meets On Efficacy of Yaz Blood Clog Warning Labels
By Amanda Antell
In a recent FDA meeting, an extensive research study that was conducted over the past six years showed the results of over 800,000 women taking different brands of oral contraceptives. The results of the FDA study concluded that new users of Yasmin or Yaz birth control are twice as likely to experience blood clots compared to older birth control pills that contain the progestin levonorgestrel. Yaz and Yasmin contain the hormone drospirenone.
After the presentations were complete and both sides had made their comments and arguments against each other’s studies, members of the public were allowed to speak; each was limited to three minutes. Family members of Yaz blood clot victims described how Bayer stole their happy daughters, who had suffered and died after experiencing a pulmonary embolism, or other complications from taking Yaz. Members of women’s health organizations spoke about the unnecessary health risks posed by drospirenone. Two scientists confirmed this statement, including Bert Gerstman, an epidemiologist, who criticized the design of Bayer’s studies.
The point of the hearing was to decide whether or not to black box or recall Yaz, or other Bayer birth control pills containing drospirenone. Despite the strong turnout of public appeal and desperation, the final tally of the committee board voted 11 to 15. Reportedly, most clinician member of the board saw the Bayer products as too beneficial despite the risks, and needed no further evidence that Yasmin and Yaz may cause problems to their patients. Supposedly, they refused to accept reported results that Yasmin and Yaz pose greater blood clot risks than other birth control pills.
Ultimately, the final result of the meeting concluded with the board deciding to word the warning labels differently on Yaz and other Bayer birth control products, and use simpler language. Many scientists criticized Bayer’s chemical design for Yaz, and were much more sympathetic to the public’s dismay.
Yasmin/Yaz Side Effects
Yaz, Yasmin and other birth control pills containing drospirenone have been linked to:
- Heart attack
- Deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the legs)
- Pulmonary embolism (blockages in the lungs)
- Stroke
- Gallbladder disease
Studies have shown that drospirenone, the main ingredient of Yasmin and Yaz, has been linked as a possible cause to these side effects. Drospirenone is a new form of synthetic progesterone that has been found to be effective in birth control pills. Unfortunately, it can cause elevated levels of potassium in the body, which may cause serious heart conditions and other health concerns.
For example, a Dutch study looked at over one million women from 2001-2008 taking Yaz and other Bayer birth control products. Researchers confirmed nearly 3,000 blood clots occurred while the subjects were taking the product. This study confirmed the suspicion that drospirenone have caused these deadly side effects in women, and further prove that:
- Women using Yaz are at a higher risk than those using other oral contraceptives with the progestogen, levonorgestrel, instead of the drospirenone.
- The risk of blood clot was not reduced by using Yaz with 20 ug estrogen, instead of Yasmin with 30 ug estrogen.
Yaz is still one of the most widely used oral contraceptives in America.
