A Beovu lawsuit lawyer can help patients take legal action if they suffered from Beovu eye problems after treatment.

What Are Beovu Safety Issues?

Beovu is an injectable treatment for wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a condition in which blood vessels in the retina overgrow and leak—causing vision disturbances. Beovu treats wet AMD by inhibiting the growth of retinal blood vessels. Unfortunately, instead of preventing wet AMD complications such as vision loss, Beovu may cause further eye problems.

Beovu is linked to serious eye conditions such as retinal vasculitis—inflammation of retinal blood vessels—and retinal vascular occlusion—blockages in the retina’s blood vessels. Both conditions can cause visual disturbances and may even lead to serious consequences such as permanent vision loss.

In late 2020, Beovu manufacturer Novartis Pharmaceuticals released information from a safety review of the drug. According to this data, adverse eye events are more common in patients who previously suffered from such problems or prior intraocular inflammation. A history of these events within a year of Beovu treatment raised the risks for eye complications from 0.46% to 3.97%, according to Novartis’ press release.

Although Beovu is still sold in the United States, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved new label changes in 2020 to better warn patients about the risks for adverse side effects. The new updated label specifically warns about the risks for retinal vasculitis and retinal vascular occlusion.

Have Consumers Filed Beovu Lawsuits?

red eyesAfter suffering from Beovu side effects, some consumers took legal action against Novartis. In March, a Nebraska woman filed a Beovu lawsuit claiming that she wasn’t warned of these adverse complications before agreeing to treatment.

The plaintiff allegedly suffered from retinal vascular occlusion after Beovu treatment. According to the Beovu lawsuit, the patient and her doctor would not have chosen to treat her wet AMD with Beovu if they knew about the risks beforehand.

Novartis also faces legal claims from a former employee. Novartis’ former worldwide brand medical director claims that the company reported inaccurate safety information while seeking approval for the wet AMD medication.

This information allegedly indicated that a Beovu competitor had double the risks for heart attacks and strokes when compared to Beovu. In reality, the risks of the two drugs are comparable, according to the former Novartis employee. When the plaintiff brought these inaccuracies up, she was allegedly retaliated against and fired.
