Dilantin Users Sue Over Undisclosed Side Effects

By Christina Drury

Dilantin side effectsStevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) has been known to be caused by a variety of pharmaceutical drugs. Among that list is a drug known as Dilantin. The use of this drug has been called into question among the controversy that the drug has the potential to cause its user to develop a life-threatening or life-altering illness. Several lawsuits have been filed against the makers of the drug, including some plaintiffs who are filing almost 10 years after taking the medication and suffering from the side effects. Plaintiffs who are filing nearly a decade after taking Dilantin are doing so as they have just been made aware of the association between Dilantin and Stevens Johnson Syndrome.
What are the Symptoms of Stevens Johnson Syndrome?

Stevens Johnson Syndrome is described as a horrific disease that has been characterized by the appearance of blisters and a large rash on the outside of the patient’s body. SJS also affects the inside of the mouth and throat, making it nearly impossible for the patient to eat or swallow. SJS has also been known to affect the eyes, causing extreme and permanent sensitivity to light. Another side effect of Dilantin is what is known as toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). It is the appearance of the skin peeling back which has been compared to what a burn victim might experience. In fact, most SJS and TEN patients who have taken Dilantin are treated in the burn unit of the hospital.

SJS Lawsuits against Dilantin

Several Dilantin lawsuits have been filed alleging the manufacturer did not do enough to warn patients of the risk of developing Stevens Johnson Syndrome from taking the drug. One such lawsuit claims that with studies showing that certain ethnic and racial groups are more at risk of developing SJS and TEN, the maker of the anti-seizure drug were aware of the potential risks but failed to inform the medical community and the general public. Without proper warning labels, the makers of Dilantin face multiple Stevens Johnson Syndrome lawsuits.
