Dilantin SJS Victims Aren’t Just Epileptics
By Jessica Tyner
The drug Dilantin has been linked to numerous cases of Stevens Johnson Syndrome. SJS is a severe skin rash that can lead to TEN (skin death). It comes on quickly, is often misdiagnosed, and can be deadly in just a couple of days. Perhaps the most famous case of Dilantin-caused SJS is the heartbreaking story of the nine-year-old girl who died just one month after taking the Pfizer drug. The Other Dilantin Uses
Most people think of epilepsy when they hear the drug name Dilantin, but it actually is used to treat other ailments, too. Dilantin is prescribed to people of all ages.
Surprisingly, Dilantin can be used to treat a specific type of face pain known as trigeminal neuralgia. However, other seizure medications are more effective when treating this ailment, so Dilantin is rarely used. Also called TN, this type of facial pain is so severe that it’s nicknamed the “suicide disease.” A type of spasm causes the pain, which is why anti-seizure drugs like Dilantin can be helpful. Anything from temperature, pressure and tension can bring on TN and it’s especially common in those who have MS. It’s often likened in degree of pain to shingles.
People with certain psychiatric disorders are also treated with Dilantin. For those with mania or bipolar disorder, these patients can experience relief with the popular drug. However, Dilantin can negatively react with the many other medications that these patients may be prescribed. In addition to the increased risk of Stevens Johnson Syndrome, psychiatric patients also face higher risks simply because they’re taking so many medications. It’s important to completely divulge all medication information to doctors when considering a change in regimen.
Dilantin SJS Symptoms to Watch
Most people haven’t heard about SJS unless they or someone they know has become a victim. For those who have recently added Dilantin to their regimen, it’s crucial to watch for any changes in the skin.
SJS starts as a simple rash, but spreads quickly and develops into blisters especially near the groin, mouth, nose and eyes. If you or a loved one uses Dilantin and experiences blisters, that’s a red flag for Stevens Johnson Syndrome. Especially with vulnerable patients like children or the elderly, acting quickly is key to treatment.
There’s no cure for SJS, but proper treatment can help someone survive. Some severe SJS cases not only cause fatality, but also permanent disfigurement and blindness. Since Dilantin SJS is relatively rare, many healthcare professionals will dismiss early SJS as nothing more than an allergic reaction or hives, so it’s critical that possible SJS victims are vigilant.
