Jardiance is a type of diabetes medication meant for the control and treatment of type-2 diabetes. It was initially approved by the FDA in 2011. The drug belongs to a class of diabetes drugs known as sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors.

Jardiance and other SGLT2 inhibitors work by filtering blood sugar out of the body through the urine. Patients taking SGLT2 inhibitors may experience an increase in the frequency or output of urination due to this filtration. As this class of type-2 diabetes drugs is fairly new, many of the possible side effects have not yet been adequately discovered or studied. However, several serious complications have been linked to the drug so far.

What Are the Dangers of Jardiance?

According to several studies regarding the side effects associated with Jardiance, patients taking the medication may be more likely to experience several serious complications.

Dangers of Jardiance include a doubled risk of patients developing diabetic ketoacidosis. Diabetic ketoacidosis occurs when acids, or ketones, build up in the bloodstream.

This condition can be life-threatening if it is not diagnosed and treated promptly. Side effects of ketoacidosis may include thirst and dry mouth, frequent urination, high blood sugar levels, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, a fruity odor on the breath, and trouble breathing.

Other side effects associated with Jardiance may include dehydration, yeast infections, and serious urinary tract infections. Urinary tract infections related to Jardiance may be difficult to overcome and may even become life-threatening if the infection spreads. One of the most serious possible dangers of Jardiance is an increased risk of amputation.

Is Jardiance Linked to Amputations?

In addition to less serious side effects, Jardiance has been linked to an increased risk of amputation. According to one study published in BMJ in 2018, the use of Jardiance may double the risk of needing to have a leg or foot amputated.

Patients with diabetes often have poor blood circulation in their legs and feet. This poor circulation combined with elevated urination levels may lead patients to be dehydrated. Additionally, for patients with very high levels of blood sugar, the filtration may decrease their blood volume, making their circulation worse.

These factors may combine to increase a patient’s risk of requiring a lower limb or foot amputation. Patients at the highest risk for Jardiance-related amputation may include people with peripheral artery disease or foot ulcers. Weight and age may also play a role in a patient’s risk factors.

What Warnings Have Been Issued Regarding Jardiance?

Although the FDA has issued warnings regarding other type-2 diabetes drugs in the SGLT2 inhibitor class, no warning has yet been issued regarding Jardiance specifically.

On Aug. 29, 2018, the FDA released a warning about SGLT2 inhibitors in general noting that they may increase the risk of a serious infection known as necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum, or Fournier’s gangrene. Colloquially, it is also known as flesh-eating disease, an apt description of the infection’s effects, as parts of the body’s soft tissue die. Along with the FDA warning, the agency also began requiring that manufacturers add a warning about this risk to the prescribing information and the patient Medication Guide.

Additionally, there is some evidence showing that the manufacturers of the drug may have been aware of the side effects and dangers of Jardiance before informing the public of these risks.

Victims who have been harmed by Jardiance complications may be eligible to hire an attorney and file a class action lawsuit against the drug manufacturers. Victims may be able to collect compensation for injuries, pain and suffering, and other damages.

Can I File a Lawsuit Over Jardiance Side Effects?

Lawsuits allege that drug makers either knew or should have known about the risks associated with their SGLT2 inhibitor medications, including Jardiance.

If you or someone you love has suffered from these or other side effects after using Jardiance, you may be able to file a lawsuit and pursue compensation. Of course, filing a lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering caused by these complications, nor can it bring a loved one back to life, but it can at least help to alleviate the financial burden incurred by medical expenses, lost wages, and more.

Filing a lawsuit can be a daunting prospect, especially while dealing with health complications, so Top Class Actions has laid the groundwork for you by connecting you with an experienced attorney. Consulting an attorney can help you determine if you have a claim, navigate the complexities of litigation, and maximize your potential compensation.

If you or a loved one experienced diabetes amputation after taking Jardiance or Farxiga, you may have a legal claim and may be eligible to seek compensation from the drug maker for your medical and other expenses. Fill out the form on this page now to see if you qualify!
