Research suggests that Qtern medicine and other diabetes drugs may lead to a flesh-eating infection. If you took Qtern medicine and developed Fournier’s gangrene, you may have a legal claim.

The FDA recently released a warning that some drugs used to treat type-2 diabetes like Qtern medicine may cause patients to develop a rare, flesh-eating bacterial infection in their genitals.

The infection has been linked with a specific class of diabetes medication, called sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. Drugs like canagliflozin, dapagliflozin, and empagliflozin are in the class of SGLT2 drugs. They can appear in single-ingredient products or can appear as a component of a drug with multiple ingredients, like metformin.

These drugs work to treat type-2 diabetes by encouraging the kidneys to excrete glucose through urine output.

SGLT2 inhibitors include:

  • Invokana
  • Invokamet/Invokamet XR
  • Farxiga
  • Xigduo XR
  • Qtern
  • Jardiance
  • Glyxambi
  • Steglatro
  • Segluromet
  • Steglujan

Now, lawyers are looking for patients who use Qtern medicine to manage their type-2 diabetes and have developed Fournier’s gangrene.

About Fournier’s Gangrene

The infection that may be associated with SGLT2 diabetes drugs like Qtern medicine is Fournier’s gangrene, also known as necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum.

The high levels of sugar that are excreted in the urine when patients take SGLT2 can reportedly cause patients to develop infections. Though these infections can sometimes be simple like urinary tract infections or yeast infections, in some cases, more serious infections can develop.

The serious infections could include Constridium perfringens, Group A Streptococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Vibrio vulnificus. Fournier’s gangrene can develop from these infections.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a bacterial infection of the tissue under the skin that surrounds muscles, nerves, fat, and blood vessels. In the case of Fournier’s gangrene, this condition can infect the perineum, or the sensitive area between the anus and the testicles or vagina. This condition develops when the bacteria entered into a cut in the skin and spreads.

Unfortunately, this condition can spread to the genitals and even to the abdominal wall. Reportedly, this condition can progress rapidly and become quite severe if it not treated quickly and effectively with antibiotics.

In some serious and rare cases, people who have developed necrotizing fasciitis have required amputation of infected limbs, and some people have died from the condition.

Qtern Medicine and Fournier’s Gangrene

Though the condition is serious, it is rare. The FDA has reported only one death from Fournier’s gangrene among people who take SGLT2 inhibitors. About a dozen SGLT2 users have been hospitalized with Fournier’s gangrene.

People who did develop Fournier’s gangrene after taking SGLT2 inhibitors reportedly became infected after just a few months after starting an SGLT2 inhibitor like Qtern medicine.

Symptoms of the condition can be hard to spot initially, but can then escalate quickly. Initial symptoms of the condition include redness of the genital area, inflammation, urinary frequency, pain in the genitals, and discomfort. Those experiencing such symptoms should seek medical help quickly, because the condition can become life-threatening quickly.
